slightly off at a tangent, the Arndale Manchester bombing, was on June 15 1996, the same day England beat Scotland 2-0 in the euros I guess security will be extra tight next week In the early 80’s I worked for Grand Met and for a short time ran Seftons bar ironically named after the grey mare killed by the IRA in Hyde Park bombing. Some 10+ years later it was destroyed in the blast (name had changed to Paddy’s Rat and Carrot). Scary thoughts. Coincidently I was also in The Tavern in the Town in Brum two days before the Birmingham Pub Bombings 😨 pubs-of-manchester.blogspot.com/2010/01/seftons-corporation-street.htmldid you ever stop at the grand hotel in brighton ? 🤔

"The inquiry’s findings on MI5 are damning.
Sir John Saunders details how, in the months before the attack, MI5 received two pieces of intelligence that were highly relevant to the plot."

The chairman’s conclusions in relation to MI5 are devastating - not only does he find the attack might have been prevented had different steps been taken, but he also rejects the service’s expert conclusion about no-one other than Salman and Hashem Abedi being knowingly involved in the attack.
Sir John suggests that MI5’s position was out of step with the experience of its officers.
The secret hearings are credited with allowing the inquiry to question MI5 staff directly involved in the decision-making about Salman Abedi, rather than merely a senior corporate witness.
This latter approach has previously happened in inquests for previous terror attacks.
He says it became apparent that MI5’s corporate position did not reflect what the relevant officers did, thought or would have done at the time.
Rather, the corporate position was more a “retrospective justification for the actions taken or not taken”.

MI5 'profoundly sorry'
MI5 Director General Ken McCallum has said he is "profoundly sorry" MI5 did not prevent the Manchester Arena attack.
In a statement, McCallum said gathering "covert intelligence is difficult" but had the security service managed to "seize the slim chance we had, those impacted might not have experienced such appalling loss and trauma".

I can't recall who said it but I do remember someone asking Cameron what the biggest surprise was for him when he become PM and he said the size of the terrorist threat to the UK. Reading the press about the failures from MI5 and others around the Manchester Arena bombing they do touch on the other terrorist attacks around that time and the amount of people they needed to monitor (they were stretched). So you don't like to be too critical but how they missed Abedi considering all that they knew...

The materials for the bomb were in clear view.
