The usual suspects time and time again will put our own country down against anyone and everyone. Defending China. Very odd www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/lobbying-firm-linked-to-beijing-accessed-influential-uk-figures/ar-BB17tecm"A lobbying firm with close links to the Chinese government has gained access to influential Establishment figures, including George Osborne and Prince Andrew, an investigation by The Mail on Sunday can reveal. Hampton Group, which has its HQ near St Paul's Cathedral in Central London, was founded by a former Chinese government official. It also had a three-year commercial relationship with a PR firm in Beijing whose clients include China Central Television, the state broadcaster accused of pumping out government propaganda, and the 48 Group Club, a group of business and political figures infavour of closer ties with China. Until now, Hampton's work – and the web it has spun between Beijing, Westminster and Royal palaces – has gone unnoticed."

There are only 2 real superpowers in the world right now, China and the USA. The EU, Russia, India and Brazil could be classed as the supporting cast, the UK is little more than a bit part player. We may still be the 6th biggest economy, but 80% of our economy is service based, things like the retail sector, the financial sector, the public sector, business administration, leisure and cultural activities. The other 20% is made up mainly of agriculture, manufacturing and construction.
If we lose even 1 or 2% of the service sector, by banks moving the the EU for example, it will have a massive impact on the country.
We need to trade and deal with the likes of China, Saudi Arabia, Israel, the US and other less than desirable countries, I accept that. I don't like it, but there is very little that you or I can do about it.
All of the above mentioned countries have a history of questionable (at best) human rights, but it's the fact they are still pushing boundaries that galls me.
A few people have picked me up for in their view defending China. I am not and never will defend China, but I will also stand up to the human rights abuses in places like Israel, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states, in Myanmar, in the US and even in this country, just as many before me stood up against apartheid in South Africa and fascism and communism in Europe in the last century.
Pointing the finger at China while ignoring the abuses by other countries is wrong.

I actually agree with a lot of that, but this thread is about China... Feel free to start one on Saudi Arabia

This thread is specifically about China and it’s wrong doings. It’s like somebody starting a thread about how s**t Grimsby are but you come along with, “Yeah but, Southend are s**tter”.

Off on a tangent here chaps but whilst I didn't vote for Blair (never voted for anyone though to be fair) I have to say that there was something about that time. Perhaps because I was in my prime (well, as good as it was going to get anyhow) that maybe clouding my thinking but things during that time felt pretty good. It did feel as though there was a real "feel good" vibe about the country. Cool Britannia and all that. I mean when you compare things to now. Strange really how things turn out, how he is now viewed. I mean at the time he won and won well. Yet look how it turned out. The disaster that was Iraq and I have no doubt that it was his Labour that sowed the seeds for Brexit that came along all those years later (looking to rub the rights nose in diversity didn't quite play out how they intended).

Haha, no I have voted for winners before, I just didn't vote at all during the 90s for various reasons. And whether anything is popular opinion, is, well an opinion. What's odd though is a thread was started about a regime that is awful, when as a country, we'll take their money, and support other regimes that are just as bad. And, if people really are as disgusted as they say, then boycott Chinese goods and the infrastructure they invest in. Return of the Hype is bang on,it's capitalism and we all but into it.

This thread is specifically about China and it’s wrong doings. It’s like somebody starting a thread about how s**t Grimsby are but you come along with, “Yeah but, Southend are s**tter”. I didn't notice any conditions forbidding bringing other examples into the thread. Perhaps that might an idea for all future threads. Can you imagine how short every thread would be? If someone was to start a thread about how well Whalley for example does or doesn't do today and everyone is banned from bringing up his performance in any other game ever it would destroy any context. I did however notice that once again accusations are being raised regarding people defending China. I have seen no-one defend them. I have myself mentioned that they are not alone in the disgraceful things that they do, but somehow in certain posters minds that's tantamount to a defence of them.
