www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8207393/Sales-Easter-eggs-wine-barbecues-paddling-pools-soar-ahead-four-day-break.htmlHeavy-handed police are prowling supermarket aisles in a bid to catch shoppers buying 'non-essential' items amid concerns that officers are abusing their powers as Britain goes into lockdown for the Easter weekend. Police forces across the country have been accused of being over-zealous in their crackdown as they threatened to set up road blocks to grill motorists on why they were not at home, causing #policestateUK to trend on Twitter. Downing Street warned police today that 'if a shop is open then it will sell whatever it has in stock', while Home Secretary Priti Patel called on officers not to be 'heavy-handed' during the coronavirus lockdown. It comes as Cambridge Police's official Twitter account boasted that officers had visited a local superstore this morning to snoop on shoppers and found aisles selling non-essentials were 'empty'. The tweet caused outrage from social media users, with many pointing to a post sent by the same account hours earlier thanking a local chocolate shop for dropping off a 'generation donation of goodies' at its police station. Meanwhile a viral video showed a South Yorkshire police officer scolding a family on their own doorstep for letting their young children play on their front lawn. The force later apologised for the encounter, which it called 'well-intentioned but ill-informed', after the officer told the young family: 'You do not want your children getting the virus, it does not stop in front of your garden.'

The sooner the lockdown is over the better (i know it wont be for a time yet, dont worry). Clearly a small number of people dont understand what needs to happen to get over the worst of it. And clearly some of the police seem to want to go over and above what is sensible policing in the situation.

The juxtaposition of capitalism and a wannabe police state. Capitalism will win out of course.

Well, alcohol must be classified as an essential, otherwise they'd have closed the Off Licences!

Well, alcohol must be classified as an essential, otherwise they'd have closed the Off Licences! They did, then almost immediately reopened them. As for those queries about the whereabouts pf Priti, she is working her socks off: "Home Secretary Priti Patel called on officers not to be 'heavy-handed' during the coronavirus lockdown".

It's strange really what with the Police prowling supermarket's parks and people's front garden looking for people to "keep there distances". Go into ANY Royal mail depot and you will find nothing is being done regarding distances between staff. It's been suggested to them that they half the staff each day, so in otherwords staff work Monday Wednesday Friday and the other half Tuesday Thursday Saturday to obviously free up more space... Naah. Not interested.

'Not a key worker': Driver arrested with £57,000 of cocaine - I suppose his lawyer will try "tell that to the addicts being forced to go cold turkey". Nice try, but that driver won't be breaking lockdown rules for the next 5 years or so.

That's my point. If the government said your shutting down until you can prove to us that your doing something about people keeping there distances you might see a change of attitude.......

There's at least 6 dead bus drivers with Transport for London. All industry bosses need to take notice of that before it's too late.

Naah. Not interested. not that I'm at work at the moment or have been for months but it is a horrible situation for the company, its not as if could have been planned for, just a couple of days without delivering mail and the backlog becomes impossible to deal with at the best of times most frames are pretty much at least 2 meters apart, and it was weeks ago they stopped shared vans and allowed workers to use their own transport if possible they don't go near the customers either I suppose the biggest problem is the handling of mail and contamination problems, and the going backwards and forward in the morning to retrieve mail from the various points around the building, hard not to bump into each other especially when you are pushing the trolley with your full delivery on it, a trolley is about twice the size of the largest supermarket trolley ) dont forget to tip your postie, he's out there close to the frontline at the moment

Another example of community policing, this time by Greater Manchester Police. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8210029/Police-threaten-man-pepper-spray-arrest-running-errands-mother.htmlA man was arrested and threatened with pepper spray by police officers as he was dropping off food for his vulnerable mother during coronavirus lockdown. Shocking footage shows an officer putting handcuffs on the man for 'breaking covid rules' before screaming 'you'll be next' to a bystander in Fallowfield, Manchester. A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: 'We are aware of footage circulating regarding an officers actions at an incident in Fallowfield in Manchester. 'Although the matter is being investigated fully by our professional standards branch, our initial review shows that the incident wasn't dealt with in the professional way we would expect and we apologise for that. 'The public rightly expect the highest standards from our officers and we will investigate this matter thoroughly and properly. 'A senior member of the force is speaking to the man and his family today. We would ask that the public understand the stresses that our officers are working under at present and we hope this apology will be welcome to those involved.'

What about the sterling work that the police are doing in what is a very testing and demanding environment?

What about the sterling work that the police are doing in what is a very testing and demanding environment? Quite right.... there a handful of examples of over zealous policing with a population of £65 m and 125,000 police it represents a minute portion of what’s actually happening..... no mention of the fact the police have to attend every death outside hospital and experience first hand the horrors out there every day.....just the media sensationalising the few incidents were they get it wrong

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-52316003"Five councils are calling on Welsh ministers to change advice so second-home owners who pay business rates rather than council tax cannot claim. The Welsh Government said councils can ask for more evidence from claimants. Properties that are used as full-time holiday accommodation are often registered as businesses." "In Wales, a second-home owner can register to pay business rates if the property is available to be let for at least 140 days a year and is actually let for a minimum of 70 days. "And after making the transition, they may be eligible for a discount from the Welsh Government, including a 100% discount if the rateable value is less than £6,000.One councillor has claimed owners of "around 250" second homes in Powys have moved to paying business rates in this way, and that Powys council is in the process of issuing grant payments." "Gwynedd has about 5,000 second homes - more than any other county in Wales - and the council estimates the owners of between 1,500 and 1,800 of them may be registered as businesses. If all were to receive the grant it would mean a total of more than £15m being paid out from Gwynedd alone. Gwynedd council leader Dyfrig Siencyn said he had made a plea to Wales' Housing Minister Julie James, who "has sympathised with our case" "A Welsh Government spokesman said: "Business support grants are available to self-catering businesses as they fall within one of the sectors most immediately affected by the pandemic and they make an important contribution to our tourism economy."However, local authorities have discretion about awarding the grant and can also require business owners to provide additional evidence to support their claim."Second homes are liable for council tax and may be subject to additional premiums of up to 100%. The premiums are set by individual local authorities." the article does not state how many second owners have put in a claim, this is loophole that needs changing there is a big difference between somone running a carvan park and a person who has a second home and rents it out when they are not there.
