If only Ed Miliband had eaten a cheese sandwich instead. I wonder what he regrets more, not ordering a nice ploughman's or those party reforms of his. As when it comes to Labour's electoral chances I suspect he'll be remembered for something more than his choice of sandwich... Labours electoral chances that have seen them 1. Eliminate the governments parliamentary majority 2. Currently lead with the majority of polling organisations 3. See the tories constantly and incessantly warning of a corbyn government. Those electoral chances you mean?

Jesus wept ReturnoftheHype. Even by your trolling standards that is a new low. So you've already written off Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland then?

Both the Labour and Conservative Party have found out the hard way that giving the choice of Party Leader to the Membership comes up with some pretty unpalatable results, as most of those that take the trouble to become members are wholly unrepresentative of a large proportion of their parties' supporters, being either too far to the left or the right. Thus we end up with Corbyn and Johnson.

Brace yourself Drew, with a right wing cabinet and a centralist parliament, stuffed with peed off centralist ex-ministers, parliament is about to exert it's authority. In or out of the EU.

This doesn't chime with them being unrepresentative of the population at large.

No. It is a ringing indictment of the 1st past the post system, which is well past its sell by date, but obviously still very popular with the Conservative and Labour Parties, because it suits their purposes to shut out most of the opposition. For example, I'm in North Shropshire. Voting for anyone other than Owen Paterson (or indeed anyone who isn't wearing a blue rosette) is a waste of time. So effectively all votes not for Paterson count for nothing. The same would apply if I was living in Leicester East and didn't want to vote for Keith Vaz or whoever the Labour Party put up there. No point in voting for anyone else as no chance of them getting in. www.makevotesmatter.org.uk/first-past-the-postHowever, in the EU Referendum EVERY vote counted. Hence the 72.2% turnout. www.bbc.co.uk/news/politics/eu_referendum/results

How can this be when 84% of the vote went to them. For the record I am definitively for a version of proportional representation. But to say Boris and corbyn are out of sync with voters outside of their memberships is simply wrong.

Indeed so. But there's certainly some suggestion that Hunt was 'lent' some votes to prevent Gove from being in the final 2. And there was already plenty of evidence that the Membership would only vote for a committed Brexiteer, and not one who'd changed their mind, as was the case with Hunt. So someone (probably our new Secretary of State for Education) certainly helped Johnson during the selection procedure. But yes, the Tory M.Ps share the blame too. Not only the committed Brexiteers, but also the careerists who wanted to be seen to be on the winning side. Only now do the likes of Mordaunt and Fox realise that being a committed Brexiteer wasn't enough..they had to back the winning candidate which they failed to do. As for the likes of Rudd and Hancock who abandoned any principles they had to keep a job, they are beneath contempt. I note that McVey issued a tweet saying that Boris's speech was 'aspirational, inspirational and oozing optimism'. That did the trick..Boris has made her Housing Minister.

Even by recent standards, this cabinet is turning out to be a right parade of no marks, failures and dodgy dealers. And, some people are happy with this shower. Lack of standards I suppose.

"You argued that the two mainstream parties are out of sync with the voters. How can this be when 84% of the vote went to them".
That's because the system of 1st past the post only gives the voter a limited choice, with votes for anyone other than Conservative or Labour being a wasted vote in most constituencies in England and Wales, even allowing for a modest Lib Dem revival.
So if you want the Tory or Labour M.P out, you have to vote for the other party, even though you may not be happy with their policies either.

The voter has the choice of any of the parties on the ballot. If there's many of these 'wasted votes' they become unwasted and the mp for that party is elected. Your vote is a vote. None are 'wasted' If Labour and the tories were that far out of kilter at the last ge then we wouldn't have seen the results we did.

Corbyn’s just let one go, Long-Bailey can’t remember is she left the front door open, McDonnell's looking to start a fight, **** knows who’s on Candy Crush and Abbott's counting sheep…1, 2, 15, 140, 1...

We’ve had an interesting morning going through the new Cabinet and working out what major policies they have pushed through Parliament. Aside from Gove it doesn’t mount up to a lot and some may argue Goves policies in education were not overly successful - although he faired better with his environment policies
Being able to successfully push through new policies in Parliament might seem like a small issue, but lack of experience throughout the Cabinet in doing that will be an issue in the coming months and post brexit. It’s a dull but really important part of creating legislation involving working with Committees, Civil Servants and the Lords and might be a stumbling block to the aspirations of the new Cabinet. They are all on a very steep learning curve

Boris Johnson has designed this Cabinet to win a snap election with the votes of economically disadvantaged white voters with xenophobic tendencies dazzled by buffoonery and audacity.
Remind you of someone?
That Johnson has appointed Dominic Cummings to chief adviser – difficult, unbiddable and a master campaign strategist – tells you the real purpose of this government: to win a mandate for no deal in the autumn.
