The last youngster Southampton off us was Harry Lewis but he’s still nowhere near their first team. I wouldn’t blame Rhys if he decides to go there but would he be better off staying here where the journey towards first team football could be just that little bit quicker?

I would have thought the same, he will probably be out on loan at L1/L2 clubs before he gets anywhere near their first team. Whatever he decides wish him luck.
I'd forgot all about Harry Lewis too. According to soccerbase last season he played 39 times for Dundee Utd in Scottish Championship but this season he's managed just 3 games for the U21's in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Southampton do have a great track record when it comes to developing players. If I was a young player, that is one of the places I would love to end up at.

If he is that highly rated why are we releasing him?

If he is that highly rated why are we releasing him? Well the big fat cheque and plenty of add ons will be why.

People are miss understanding this a little
From the latest star article this is my reading of it
Hes in last year of two year youth deal - essentially our youth team dont think he will make it. We told him early doors not likely to be offered a pro deal More so we shipped him off way down the pyramid. Hes played lots of games in non league football (22) During this time hes also been off doing trials for other clubs to get a deal elsewhere. In theses hes done very well. At the end of this season he can leave our club on a free, his youth deal expires. No club has to pay to take him off us, we have released him... I suspect there might be something in the rules that means we might be due a nominal fee, but its just as likely we wont get anything.
All in an odd one. Nothing like Harry Lewis, who Southampton off us inside his youth deal and we were protected to get some kind of fee/sell on.
All makes me think how can our youth team makes such early judgement on if a player will make it or not when clubs with more experienced (quality) youth sets ups think hes work persisting with?
That's how i read it...

That's how i read it... I guess given the sheer volume of players in the system with only one or two that will 'make it', there will always be those sort of margin calls that have to be made on boys who still have physical and mental maturing to do.
My lad's U13 Sunday team has 5 players in it who are in the STFC shadow academy squad. 2-3 of them look like very decent players to me and I wonder why they are not fully signed. By the same token one of those 5 was on the Town's books but was dropped and joined us in the summer. He's a full back and reads the game better than almost anyone in the team for me, with the great personal attitude too from what I see - so my thought this season has been 'how the hell could they have released him?' He's in the shadow squad so no doubt if his development curve meets their criteria again then they can re-sign, but it must be a minefield to really get a grip on how these lads will finish up as adults.
