Good point One of the reasons I'm not in favour of keeping Mellon is due to this. He moans about not having the resources yet he's signed on numerous players, probably on decent wages who rarely feature or who get dropped and disappear - Clark for example seems to do well then gets dropped and disappears, Grandin hasn't actually featured in the months he's been here, no-one knows what has happened to Tootle, Barnett was rarely used and loaned out, even the new signing Wellens has hardly featured. On paper Mellon had a squad of 30 players to choose from, 5 more players than Burton, 6 more than Walsall. Too many to all sense and purposes, as with the case of Grandin for example. Doesn't figure but must still must be getting paid, even if it's not a lot and do we pay Scott Vernon a decent package just to push the shopping trolley around on a Saturday afternoon? And what of Anderson and Jones? If they've been given professional contracts then can they not make it to the bench once in a while for a league game? Also, having too many loan players for the match day squad. Whatever the size of the budget we must have a squad of quality not quantity next season. If it means running with a smaller squad than this season then so be it, other clubs do it and successfully so why not us? Totally agree with this, I want MM to stay but there where times during the season when it appeared that the team and formation was chosen lotto-style ! 1/ Select the keeper, 2/ All other players names in a bowl, pick out 10, 3/ Second bowl with various formations in it, select one and then attempt to match the players to the selected formation !...oh and 4/ Change the formation 3 or 4 times during the match to try and get something to work

We need wingers if we are going to play 442, wing backs if we are going to play 532, strikers whatever formation we play. Hopefully Leutwiler, Burton and NKP will sign up on 2 year contracts Black, Whalley, Smith, Mangan and Agogo are already signed up (weso also has an option which I presume he'll take up). Let everyone else go, or (if under contract) go on frees if they can find someone interested. I still cannot believe we are stuck with Wellens for next year - what was the thought process there ? I think the Wellens thing is a bit like Lawrence. Maybe we negotiated reduced wages by giving him the security of a longer contract. But the issue is whether he can keep fit enough during his twilight years. I think his Ryan Woods- type quality on the ball is there for all to see and something we definitely need going forward. Let's see how he looks after pre-season before writing him off. True he missed pre-season and I hope that you are right. I'm worried by his own comments that his legs have gone and the fact that when he has played he has been noticeably and desperately slow over the first 5 yards (which is less of a fitness issue; more age) - far more so than Lawrence in his first season with us. Talks a good game and clearly good with the ball at his feet - but that won't cut it in League 1 I fear.

I am in the quality not quantity camp and whilst a number of players and I am thinking of Whalley and Brown were much better this season than I expected them too be especially Brown in his unfamiliar position, that does not for me qualify then for offering a contract if we can buy better, if we cannot maybe we do offer them a one year!
I would have just two goalkeepers preferably Leutwiler and Burton
Halstead - I would let go and if Loots does not stay replace Loots with a good keeper
NKP - Definitely another two year contract in my book Brown - maybe a one year deal but he really should be no more than a squad player see my comments above Whitbread - let go Grandison - let go Clark - let go JLAA - let go Vernon - let go Demetriou - let go Grandin - let go Whalley let go see comments above Akpa Akpro let go Wesolowski subject to medical reports another contract
Signed players: Wellens give him pre-season and if no improvement let him go out on loan Black I think unless there is interest from other clubs I rate him as a player but worry about his volatility he is always a red card waiting to happen Tootle - Offload Sadler- Offload Agogo keep! EThan Jones and Kaiman Anderson hopefully will develop and play some first team football Mangan - Keep Barnett- Offload hopefully for money Collins Offload hopefully for money! Smith develop
Which will leave the squad as below:
GK- Leutwiler and Burton Total 2 Defence: Smith NKP new CB new Rb new Left back maybe one more defender Total 6 Midfield: Wellens Agogo Wesolowski Black a left and right winger possibly one more Total 7 Forwards Mangan Jones and Anderson at least two more strikers preferably three with pedigree Total 6
I feel the smaller but hopefully better quality squad would mean us attracting better players within our budget
Whalley and Brown possible keeps depending on recruitment and budget but we cannot afford a below standard squad again as we were very close to relegation and we must be plying our trade in the top half of the league which means using our money more wisely.
So a total of 21 squad players including untried Jones and Anderson and this to be supplemented with loan players and bringing the youth lads through faster e.g. the likes of Chris Gallagher midfield who will be a second year and possibly Callum Roberts full back
I want the defence to be faster and competitive this time around with seasoned and preferably younger mobile players I want to see plenty of pace in midfield going forward and creative I want speed and guile in attack
All new signings should have a good few years left in the game to give them a sell on value too!
I am in the keep Micky camp and look to him to rectify the wrongs of recruitment this past season, he has the experience and time will tell ....
It will be an interesting close season once more, but with the Goldson, Ginelly and Woods monies taking a little pressure off and maybe the sale of land to Lidl we are set fair to invest in better training facilities, recruitment of first team and youth players and handled correctly we have a bright future!

Major clearout for me. Only players out of contract that i'd keep would be Leutwiler and Brown.

Not even Knight-Percival? Lacks pace against these quick strikers in League 1. I know a lot will not agree but that's just my opinion. This is a joke surely? He's clearly been the only defender to have had a good season, look how we crumbled when he was out. If you think we can get better than NKP then you're deluded. He could walk into most teams in League 1 easily...

Just listened to Brian Caldwell CEO on Radio Shropshire who said the retained list will be confirmed during the third week of May - when they need to let the players know. Mellon is away this week and last Friday afternoon he gave the chairman and Brian his list of targets and probably who he wanted to keep.

With the need to free up alot of budget to make massive changes and big improvements mainly in defence and upfront, I'm expecting like others on here that most of the out of contract players not to be offered deals, but it could easily include players who've done fairly well this season such as Brown.
It could only be Leutwiler, NKP and Weso who are offered deals.
Seeing how many players that are being released by other clubs already (double figures for some clubs) - if there's a chance to free up wages and build again, it might to best, but what could also be seen as harsh choice (e.g. not offering Brown a new deal) to make.

I hope Brown is offered a deal. I thought he was coming on nicely when he got injured. I also liked him because he actually had a bit of passion about him, when some of the others didn't look interested.

Brown not a fullback for me. He was worth signing for 12mths and has done a job for us but we need specialist full backs. It has been a problem position for us with Sadler and Tootle not really a success and Brown filling in.

Just to turn this retained list on it's head - how many players do you think want to stay ?

I think Brown has earned a new contract but he isn't the future left back or wing back wise! We need a specialist in those positions as already said.

Ian Black has put in a transfer request & is heading back north. If true, i guess he didn't get the extension to his existing contract and pay rise he felt he deserved after just 4 months here and his large selection of cards. poor chap.

though not much to go on after listening to the interview - but basically Micky is in Blackpool but in touch with Adam many times a day and has been meeting targets, Brian CEO is on holiday, Whitters looks out of the window and the pitch is to blame for the poor home form!

So did all the teams who came to us and beat us enlarge their pitches when preparing for the match?!! Surely we should have had the advantage of the larger pitch as we played on it more often?! I am very confused.

Adam LeFondre & Kevin McDonakd are two players out of contract at Wolves who I could be realistic targets for us...thing is, would we be able to a) afford their wages or b) attract them to rural Shropshire?

Ian Black has put in a transfer request & is heading back north. Source? Interesting, Black said he'd never play in Scotland again during our cup run! I'd keep JL, NKP and Brown, bit none would be a huge miss. JL is an excellent keeper but it's one position where I think you get good value in the loan market, especially as we have Burton and Rowley coming through. We'd miss NKPs leadership and think he'll be stronger with a full preseason and hopefully with better defenders around him. Brown is a good asset for the squad, you know what you get, but he'd not be a huge loss if he didn't stay on.
