Just wondering what everyone's thoughts on him are?
Failed to do the business for us last season after coming in and lost his place early on. Didn't do too badly when he came back in for a few games but hardly set the world on fire.
Some are suggesting he will be more suited to Lg1 than 2, which I'm not sure I fully understand the logic of?
Having said that, you don't just become a bad player overnight... If he performs equally as well this season though, we must have blown a fair wedge on him for very little in return???

I think he's a good player - over 100 career goals in the English lower leagues and Scottish top division demonstrates this - despite a below par season.
His problem is he is not an effective partner for Collins in a front two, and due to Collo having a pretty prolific season has not had a real opportunity to forge a partnership with another striker. He looked really good at Carlisle away when he came on at half-time, playing a little deeper in a front three.

If Vernon was only the fifth choice striker in Division 2, what on earth is the point in letting JLAA and Mangan go and yet retaining his services? I suggest that it's clearly because unlike the other two (whom MM stated he'd like to keep), he is under contract for one more year, is very likely to be one of our higher wage earners, and that coming to a financial settlement to cancel the rest of his contract will prove to be expensive.
However, if we are able to reduce the wage bill, then MM will be able to bring in other players. We know already that he's after another striker..and if Vernon goes we'd probably need two.
At his age he's not going to get any better, so I suggest we cut our losses as best as we can. Maybe his career record of 87 goals in 386 appearances might persuade some other Club to take him on.

Collins is hardly prolific and his awareness of others around him is awful, rarely gets his head up, and to quick to moan at others.

Collins is hardly prolific and his awareness of others around him is awful, rarely gets his head up, and to quick to moan at others. He's still had two seasons in which he has scored more goals than Vernon's best tally. Never rated Vernon and never understood the hype many of our fans had when we signed him - as usual, I hadn't heard of him other than Football Manager and a look at his career statistics was hardly inspiring. Consistently done OK throughout his career. From what I've seen of him, he looks pretty slow and cumbersome without any first touch to speak of. Clearly an intelligent player with some reasonable technique, but he is some way behind our two contracted strikers IMO, as well as behind our two we're having to let go. It's also worth noting I'm normally very positive/optimistic/deluded about our players!

Collins is under threat after last season. MM is dioing the right thing, strengthening the squad, creating competition and Barnett will come to the fore as a 1st choice up front. A new striker who is mobile and fast thinking who will share the ball and be able to finish will be the next key signing. Collins needs to develop and improve if he is to figure further in plans. Vernon, if they can buy out or offload Vernon it is best for him and the Club.

It's all about moving the squad forward in line with MM's ambition of building best shrewsbury side ever, story in yesterday's shropshire star.
So people need to move on so we can do be competitive and best as possible in league 1.
Regarding the striker MM is after any ideas who he is?

Certainly there is a need for strikers to be up to a better level in the higher division. They won't get as much time at this level and will be up against defenders making fewer mistakes.
But the same goes for the defence - mistakes will be punished much more frequently in this division.
Anyone remember the last time we went up and some on here suggesting we might well finish high up? Hmm

All I know is he is better than Marsden and Doble. Marsden was a bit unlucky with his injury, but my god it makes you realise we really were scraping around in the bargain bucket back then weren't we. If he stays, I'd say there's very slim chance Vernon will be worth whatever we (well the club) are paying him. Firstly, I don't expect he will be starter, so he's on the bench at best. Then, he isn't going to offer much different to Collo/Barnet, so he may be overlooked in favour of the pacy wingers if we are looking to change a game. Midfield is an area we are fairly stacked, so I doubt he will be used in that role for some time. The only way I can see him getting a chance is if one of the others gets a bad injury (rapidly finding some wood to touch!). AND even if he gets 'on the pitch' he has to perform much better than he did last time out... which is 50/50 maybe? So I can't see the value in holding on to him... Mangan & A N Other for me. Harsh perhaps and I could be very wrong (as many times before), but this is the way I see it....

Changed the game when he came on against Carlisle away. There is talent there. We played him too deep

Taken off against Northampton and leaving Southern on. One of only a few mistakes by MM.

Was warned by a few SPL following friends of mine that Vernon may not set L2 on fire. Her's been the butt of many a workplace jokes ever since. Sadly it's just not worked out so best for both parties to move on. He was reportedly on £2K+ a week at Aberdeen and would suggest he'd be on around 1.5K here. Hopefully an agreement can be reached and those funds can be diverted towards Andy Mangan's direction.

All I know is he is better than Marsden and Doble. Not really an argument for retaining his services, though is it?
