MW has hinted in the Sloppy Star that the club are looking to get a 'glamour' pre-season friendly organised - if the deal suits....after hosted Galatasaray recently, coupled with the good feedback we received from Chelsea, could we conceivably attract top-class European opposition?
If so, which team would you like to see grace the hallowed turf of the GM?
Personally, I'l love to see Napoli play here (spend a couple of years working and living in Naples) or one of Dutch sides (Ajax or PSV)
Thoughts?

Nice though it would be, it's what is helpful to the squad as they build up their fitness. Talking on Radio Shropshire, MW said players don't want to be chasing around and not getting any proper workout and work on shape etc. which is what the pre-season friendlies are about.
I often think because friendlies are part of the training and build up to the new season, prices should be very low - but i understand there are costs that need to be covered.

We can have Real Madrid if we pay a £1 million.

We can have Real Madrid if we pay a £1 million. Sell out crowd at £100 a ticket and we'd almost break even! It'd be nice if a decent foreign team was over here anyway and needed a warm up game. Can't remember - how much were the Galatasaray tickets?

Matt Williams mentioned this on Shrews Player last week! Shropshire Star just nicking bits of the interview and spreading it out over a number of days to fill in their otherwise empty sports pages!

Should be interesting to interesting to see how this pans out. Clearly remember MM have a thinly veiled pop at the Gala friendly last pre-season. It obvious that Benfica are at St Georges for pre-season so one must think they'll be in the frame.

It's all a matter of price vs potential gate receipts and increased fan base. Football is all money

Olympique Lyonnais, Villarreal and VfL Wolfsburg will join Arsenal for the Emirates Cup 2015 on Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26. Maybe one of those

A friendly is what it is. A friendly!
Pointless to arrange one against a Premier League side or top European Club and then they send mostly their B team or kids.
Far better to arrange ones against Championship sides including most of their 1st team players to test our ability. So Cardiff and Wolves are good selections.

Thing is, if it packs out the ground then it's a good pay day for town and people love to see some of the European teams

The game will be based on what sides are doing pre season at St George's Park hence getting galatasary two yrs ago. I guess with Burton originally securing Benfica then they were a team who are, same as Madrid did a few yrs bk too. A first warm up game against a decent L1 side is considered attractive enough for these big teams before a tournament against PL sides & other top euro sides ie Emirates Cup.

Far better to arrange ones against Championship sides including most of their 1st team players to test our ability. So Cardiff and Wolves are good selections. Disagree. I don't need to go to such a game thinking about whether it's an appropriate test of our ability, the manager can worry about that. I'm happy to see a big name or two and, if there's a good moment for our team, I'll remember that (like Michael Symes' brilliant flick & turn that left Micah Richards for dead). You might not get a top team's first XI but I've enjoyed seeing the likes of Sneijder, Drogba and Pogba at the Meadow. I know they're not competitive games but then neither is any other friendly. A bit of star quality is a welcome novelty. I really enjoyed last summer's friendlies - loads of new players and it was clear we were going to be playing an attractive passing game and that we might be pretty good at it. Won't have that newness about it this time but still a nice way to spend a warm afternoon if it's priced sensibly.

Tend to prefer an away friendly at a non league ground by the coast. Had some cracking away days through the years at little grounds where you can sit in the sun with a pint watching the game.

Aberystwyth PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!! Now that would be nice and local for me! I do remember Aber Town playing quite a few league clubs in pre season friendlies in the past. Teams used to do pre seaon training on the sand dunes down Ynyslas/Borth and then play Aber Town as part of their pre season prep.
