England playing their first match of the tour, currently 65 for 0 after bowling out St Kitts for 59. Jonathan Trott back in action for England.

Happ to see Trott in as opener rather than Boycott's ludicrous suggestion that he should replace Ballance because Trott has done better for longer for England than Ballance. He hasn't, since his average is about 20 lower after Ballance's outstanding time last summer, even if he hasn't performed in the limited overs stuff since.
Trott has experience and pedigree and did perform well last season, so I'd be perfectly happy I give him this tour as a trial run as the opener. If he doesn't perform, he shouldn't just be accommodated because of how good he used to be; the other batsmen have earnt their spots by performing very well in tests. Lyth also performed better than Trott in the CC last summer, so if Trott doesn't do well there is a ready made replacement.
Also good to see Cook scoring - despite his regaining form vs India, he still lacks that Century. Hopefully he can do it this tour.

By the sounds of things, the opposition aren't up to much (16 year old playing his debut). Then again the West indies aren't up to much either. Our test team is looking strong, I'm predicting a whitewash!

Can't really read anything into this game, or even the test series really. Will be good if the likes of Cook and Trott have the chance to play themselves into some form though - they are proven good batsmen and we will definitely need some solidity at the top of the order come the summer.

Alistair Cook retires out on 101.
Good to see him recapturing some form, albeit against limited opposition.

England face St Kitts again today in another 2 day warm up game. Will be England's last game before the first test starts next Monday.

Will be interesting to see whether Lyth is given the chance today or whether they'll give Cook and Trott more time to play together

Thank you Vanner...Good recovery but note OZ have some decent batsmen coming through including Ian Healy's son!

Thank you Vanner...Good recovery but note OZ have some decent batsmen coming through including Ian Healy's son! Yeah they're a strong outfit. we've got some excellent young players coming through however. Sibley for example who famously scored that double hundred for Surrey about 18 months ago. From last years under 19 squad we've got our very own Ed Barnard who's taken 5 wickets for Worcester's first team today in a pre season friendly against Northants. I see we're due to play St Kitts in another 2 day game, hopefully they pick a few more senior players....

Trott, Ballance & Bairstow are playing for St Kitts Trott out for a duck, caught Tredwell bowled Anderson.... England are apparently going to bowl all day (90 overs) so Trott may have a 2nd chance later today...

98 for Bairstow in what will probably be his only game of the tour. Good move to give them a few of our players, first match sounded like a complete waste of time.

Interesting team selection. Trott opening, Stokes in for Woakes (who I thought had improved sufficiently to make his place in the team secure) and Tredwell in, presumably with the intention of holding down an end in Ali's absence (despite the fact he played for Worcestershire yesterday).

Woakes isn't fully fit. I'm not sure if he's in the West Indies even. He didn't play in the warm ups anyhow.

Tredwell's been arguably our best limited-overs bowler since the India series but doesn't have much by way of red ball pedigree.

Bye bye Ballance. Stokes is over rated and Treadwell couldn't even get in his 4 day county team. What has Lyth got to do to be selected to open.

KP has a lot more work to do for an England call up. 170 against Oxford uni is a start but hardly earth shattering.
I like the team (bar tredwell, what a negative selection), however the mindset is so wrong. We're so conservative and picking Strauss as new team director or whatever it's called would be a terrible move. Get Vaughan in.

Woakes isn't fully fit. I'm not sure if he's in the West Indies even. He didn't play in the warm ups anyhow. Ah, thought he was in the squad but I may well be wrong. Indeed injured otherwise a shoo-in, become one of our most reliable bowlers recently with white and red ball. Moeen had a side strain which kept him out of the squad but is now fit again and last I heard he was expected to join the touring party if he could prove his fitness against Yorkshire. I was at New Road today along with James Whitaker and Andy Flower who probably weren't too impressed with his bowling but he had a decent knock of 60 odd yesterday before being caught behind. Agree that Tredwell is a safe and possibly negative selection, I'd have gone with Rashid knowing that Mo is likely to take his place as soon as he's fit again anyway. Easy to say now but would've been the perfect time to give Lyth a go at the top of the order, seems like perfect timing with his recent form both for Yorkshire and the Lions and against relatively weak opposition compared to what we'll face from NZ and Australia. Two opportunities to give youngsters an opportunity and prove that players will be picked on form. Promising start from KP but will probably need a full county season behind him in order to be in with a shout, door could be open now Downton's gone though.

At least our two most reliable batsmen rescued us there. Good to see Stokes finally make another score, too. Why oh why did we send in Tredwell, though?!
For me, the only way KP will get back in the test side is if results are poor and someone badly loses form in the middle order. He won't open (and Root definitely shouldn't again), won't displace Root or Bell if they're fit and carry on like today and Ballance has been, so far, a run machine. 6 downward requires either keeping or bowling proficiency, it seems with this England set up.
Unless Ballance fails to rediscover his touch, I think we won't be seeing KP again - at least in a test match. Possibly if we went 4 seamers and used KP and Root as our only spin options (and maybe Ballance) he could be fitted in, but I think too many bridges have been burned for what would only be a fairly short term fix to be made.

Tredwell's third wicket. Not doing too badly so far.

Make that four. If he keeps this up, does he stay in when Ali is fit?

20/2, Cook and Trott go cheaply again. Our top order is a real concern, Lyth has to get the nod in the second test for me.
