Shrewsbury has been named most healthy town centre in England according to a report (from BBC news this morning) Less fast food shops, Tanning salons and loan shops than other town centres.

But what opinion do you have on it? I think that's great news for Shrewsbury's centre and could help promote it to tourists.

Living in Hereford I must say I always look forward to walking through Shrewsbury, always something going on and always seems busy.....unlike Hereford which is about as a active as Matt Redmiles personal trainer!

The only reason we have less is because half of the shops are empty. Unfortunately our town centre is dying, if you compare it to telfords you can see how far we are behind.

The actual High Street in Shrewsbury which this survey refers to is in very good nick in terms of shops and services. I think there is only one empty shop at the moment
Lots of independent stores and a big variety of shops there so something Shrewsbury definitely should be proud of
It's the Pride Hill and Darwin Centres that are struggling mainly due to the finance companies that own them asking stupid rates for the shop spaces

Most shopping centres are dying - larger brands prefer to move to out of town retail sites (which in Shrews are doing well).

With Telford being my local centre I don't look forward to going in. There are very few independent shops and very little to make me want to go for anything longer than an hour or two. I genuinely look forward to going to Shrewsbury town centre as there is usually something happening.

I was getting worried that everybody else might agree that Shrewsbury is "behind" Telford. As new towns go Telford's erm, ok I guess, but if that was the model for all English towns to follow it would be time for me to bid adieu to old Blighty.

Shrewsbury basically won because of the high proportion of locally owned cafes producing home cooked food compared to fast food chains.
The tea shop daytime economy meant we scored highly.
It's a fair point.
I'm always amazed in other places when you seem to get several kebab shops on the same street.

The only reason we have less is because half of the shops are empty. Unfortunately our town centre is dying, if you compare it to telfords you can see how far we are behind. Telford Centre has more than it's fair share of empty shops, even the newer bit up towards House of Fraser. There are also the new restaurants in Southwater that really fool no one (except Telford people of course) Zizzi, Bella Italia and Pizza Express all selling Italian food, Chimichanga and Nandos doing the Tex/Mex thing and Wagamama and Mimosa offering Asian 'cuisine'. Oh and let's not forget the Harvester and the Hungry Horse doing the 'let's get them in, get them fed and get them out' routine. Nine or ten restaurants offering pretty much the same food as the place next door doesn't constitute a great choice IMO, nor does the business model lend itself to long term sustainability. By the way, have you had the opportunity to stroll through the meccas that are Wellington or Dawley recently? Charity shops, 2nd hand stores, bookies, bargain shops and pawnbrokers. To be fair Dawley has a damned good pet shop, but I would never go there otherwise. Shrewsburys indoor malls might not be thriving, but at least most of the High Street shops are occupied. Also even just within the loop of the river you can choose from umpteen independent coffee shops, whereas in Telford Centre you have Costas, Starbucks or Druckers. The biggest problem Shrewsbury has is the inept, self-serving nimbys that run the council. Telford council actually wants people to visit, whereas Shrewsbury appears to accept visitors as little more than an inconvenience with wallets.

this is great news for the Town and it's tourism. last year Britain in Bloom award, a brilliant Football Club , need I go on?
another reason the town is healthy is the lack of heavy industry for so many years. ok Trouncers Brewery had a chimney , and there were founderies in Frankwell over 100 years ago. Shrewsbury is a town with more spires than smoke belching chimneys.
Small wonder successive Kings held their summer court in Shrewsbury in the middle ages. for this alone the town should have the title Royal Shrewsbury! and Henry V111 bestowed a Bishop rik on the borough in 1539, making the town a city, but the Burgesses of the Borough thanked him and preferred to remain the Premier of boroughs

To be honest its a pretty pointless survey. It doesn't really mean anything apart from keeping a staty in a job.
