i remember that good old jean. also remember a young lad early 20s paul his name i think they called him H (NO NOT THE DOORMAN) he went to smithys aid the only one that did, a bit of a beating but he knocked out at least 6 of them fair play to him Was it Podge?? Think Podge's surname was Davies. Podge'certainly would of gone to Smithy's aid if he had been around but stopped attending matches after getting banned when some Bury fans got into the wakeman end when we were playing Northampton I think...long story.

Cardiff in 79 when i had a stanley knife turned on me, Burnley away in 82, totally bonkers, Derby away in 83? Won 3-2 in the best away performance Id ever seen and then being chased by nutters on route to the coach home, the Boro idiots after both final fixtures in the 80's and finally wolves away when waiting to get out of the custard bowl and having dustbins and bricks raining down on us

Wolves v MUFC circa 1972ish. Thousands of United fans on rampage going back to the Station kicking in shop windows etc for fun. Will never forget the Wolves piling out of the side streets straight into the United fans.Best/worst memory was hundreds of crombie, doctor Martin clad wolves fans kicking Utd all the way back to the station.

I remember Podge wading in to a gang of Sheffield Wednesday lads on the English Bridge once.
They scattered.

A friendly !!!!! at St Andrews against Celtic. All exits were opened long before the end and the Celtic support decide to pour into the back of the Blues Kop. Fortunately you could escape onto the pitch surrounds.

Probably African Champions League final - Al Ahly vs Sfaxien. Ended up in away end. There were probably 100000+ in a 80000 seater stadium. Or trying to get into Cameroon vs Cote D`Ivoire African Nations QF. Eventually they just opened the gates and let everyone in. Seemed like the whole of sub-Saharan Africa piled in.

mansfield at home years ago always sticks in my mind for some reason forest fans were with them about 20 or so came running at the meadow entrance people started scattering kids everywhere. paul harris stood there their main lad straight out the rest just stood there in amazement dancing round waiting to be rescued by the police. he passed a comment welcome to shrewsbury , best punch and funiest thing i ever seen even the police did nothing they could see it wasnt his fault

i know podge nice bloke, drives a coach in cardiff never been banned to my knowledge unless i got the wrong podge. I think we are taking about the same Podge. Last time I saw him (which was about 18 years ago now)he was working as a steward on the Shrewsbury/Cardiff main line, asked if if he still went to any matches as I hadn't for a while and he said he had been banned, not through the courts but by STFC themselves for the incident vs Northampton. Podge is an STFC legend, there was even a thread ref his whereabouts last year. top bloke.

As you say he is a top bloke, real character and STFC legend.

Wales away at the San Siro was pretty unpleasant.
QPR V Utd in the 80s was hairy.
Also, having a police dog chew my leg after the 3-3 at Wrexham in 2003 was pretty painful, but the compo did pay for a new 3 piece suite and a week in the Costa Brava. True story.

Worst violence i have witnessed was in Germany 2006 it was a night match in cologne against Sweden and it kicked of big time after the match with Germans and the German Police. See youtube for details England Hooligans in Cologne.

A number of our games with Birmingham were pretty hairy - particularly remember my dad and I feeling very nervous going back to the car after the one where we beat them 2-0 last game of the season to stay up. We ended up stopping in a kebab shop for a while until things calmed down a bit in the streets.
Going to Everton for the FA Cup game (first time I think) as a kid was scary too - the area around Goodison was like a 3rd world slum, and we were aggressively menaced for money to "watch yer car for yer" by street urchins, and abused when we refused. I then received a punch in the ear from another local and abuse for being from Shrewsbury.
I once went to Fiorentina v AC Milan for a meaningless end of season game. There were only about twenty Milan fans in the away section so didn't seem like trouble was likely even though the rather left-wing Fiorentina fans seem to hate Berlusconi and Milan. However, at halftime a large group of milan nutters suddenly appeared in the home end (on the Curva) where I was sat, and tried to "take the end", like in 60's or 70's games in the UK. They were battering the Fiorentina ultras with flag poles and bits of metal and then the Italian police arrived and they had a running battle with them instead. It was like a war zone!
Finally, Tottenham v Arsenal. No trouble inside the ground, but ugly scenes before and especially after, when Tottenham High Road was more like the Gaza Strip

my neice to a liverpool v man,u game about 5 years ago it was like world war 3 in stanley park around 300 scousers attacked the utd fans blood and glass everywhere they battered the utd fans then turned on the coaches smashing windows etc it was like a war zone well timed and organised but very scary caught the old bill well on the back foot.the real scary bit was the amount of stanley knives they had waving around imagine the damage they did slashing coats and stuf bleeding nutters.

No trouble inside the ground, but ugly scenes before and especially after, when Tottenham High Road was more like the Gaza Strip Went to a Spurs v Arsenal local derby when I was doing the 92, a night game as well. This was ground No91 and the atmosphere was very threatening that I had thoughts that I might never get to do the full set. Left the game with 10 mins to go as safety was No1 priority and the bus trip up the Tottenham High Rd was interesting to say the least even then.

I was Chief Steward at QPR v Millwall about 8 years ago, Tuesday night game, and the Millwall faithful were out in force, they congregated on the corner of the seg line, and stated chucking items at the disabled section, all the able bodied ran, but we were left trying to evacuate the disabled, just as plod stood and watched......

Birmingham City fans letting fireworks off in the away end, 1994/95 perhaps. I was only a wee nipper back then and it was my first real experience of anything close to a local derby.
Wolves in 2001 when a few of their supporters were being ushered along the bottom of the Riverside in that infamous pre-season friendly
I'm hesitant to say that I'm glad the days of organised football hooliganism are behind us because the alternative is what we're left with now which is all-seater stadiums, crap atmospheres and working class fans priced being priced out by stupidly high ticket prices.

I seem to remember being pretty apprehensive leaving St Andrews that day. Very, very menacing atmosphere around the ground although I never actually saw any aggro. Remember me and my mate selecting an older blues fan who had a couple of youngsters with him, deliberately engaging him in conversation and walking down the road with then trying desperately to blend in.

I also didn't actually see any trouble Jamo (though I heard of plenty afterwards). But it's a funny thing how there obviously was a tangible menace in the air that we both felt (and my old man, who is usually oblivious to such things but in this case was clearly rattled). Still, just added to the feeling of adventure and a great Salop escape. A day that I will always fondly remember.

Still, just added to the feeling of adventure and a great Salop escape. A day that I will always fondly remember. I was about 14 years old for that game, I went with a school friend and his dad and parked in a small official Birmingham City FC car park right behind the home terrace. We just sat in the car after the game after removing all STFC hats and scarves waiting for all the home fans to disappear. Apart from the goals and bricking it in the car park, the thing I remember the most was all the blues fans who had been singing and stuff during the game at the rear of the long terrace running along the side of St. Andrews like our. Riverside terrace coming down into the clearing and playing what looked like a massive game of British Bullldog, Town4life, the cHelsea game you spoke of, next time you talk to Podge ask him for his memories of Chelsea visiting Shrewsbury, I'm sure I recall him telling me that's how he lost his front teeth
