Don't think MM is very happy...
Mellon said: “We have got a great record at home and the lads love playing in front of the fans –but they don’t enjoy playing on that pitch.
“It’s a place where we have picked up a lot of points but the pitch is the worst in the league by some distance.
“It’s poor. We are not using it as an excuse, I’ve just benchmarked it against everyone else’s pitch.
“The groundsman is working very hard to find some sort of solution but it’s not getting any better.
“And it’s not going to get better with the weather we are having that’s for sure.”

Have the Club got artificial lights to encourage growth? Even Old Trafford suffered after expanding yet they seem to have found a solution. And is this another example in favour for allowing clubs the choice in having artificial pitches?

The cost of buying lighting/ heaters as used by many Premier clubs is staggering. Far beyond the resources of a club like ours, unless of course we go for a cracking playing surface but a sub- standard playing staff.

Did we re-lay the pitch a few years ago? I seem to remember this happening.
When we first moved grounds didn't we win awards for the best pitch in the league?
Did we cut corners when we/if we re-layed the pitch last time?
I remember the first few seasons after we moved discussing with a friend how brilliant the surface was during the winter months. It'll be interesting to see how it looks/plays tomorrow.

It is disappointing that it may affect our football.
Recent years it has been very good, I don't think it's as bad as Mellon makes out.

Not sure what's has caused this sudden deterioration - as many point out it was relaid once, possibly even twice since we've been at Otley Rd.
Andy must have been told to keep schtumm - he's normally quite quick to comment on matters pertaining to the pitch...

Doesn't look any different/worse to similar stages of previous seasons to me.

Good job MM wasn't managing us 10 years or so ago when we played at Gay Meadow. then he WOULD have had something to moan at

Surprised Simpson never used this as an excuse. After all, he used every other one in the book.

buck up Mellon, We are a league 2 club and it's not that bad and your comments are very disrespectful towards the ground staff.

Worse than accrington? Do me a favour We have the best home record in the country so why would you want to change anything about the conditions at home is beyond me. Poor from Mellon who has gone downhill in my book with this attitude

I wish someone would say why exactly the pitch is the worst in the league.....to have a moan and then not say what the exact problem is, is pointless and just looks like someone manufacturing excuses for potential results over a tough festive period.
If our pitch is the worst then why is our away form so poor?

I thought there was a lot of work done last summer .we had the best playing surface in years gone by can't Andy Groundo tell us what's changed. Please !

I did notice andy Groundo tweeted he had a meeting 4 days ago and Stfc were using j premier pitch next season. They are a quality seed supplier used by premier football teams and UK number Obe supplier ...so they say. Seems like another pitch overall this summer?!

Don't really think it's disrespectful to the groundstaff - nobody doubts they're doing all they can and Mellon mentions that, sometimes it just happens. That said, we've tended to have a very good pitch in recent years (huge credit to everyone involved) and I'd be surprised if it's "by far the worst in the league" - I'll let you know later after I've seen it for the first time in 4 months!

Would be interesting to know what it is about the pitch that isn't as good this season.
Watching from the stand it looks fine but guess its maybe a bit heavy, and bubbly in places when Mellon maybe wants a fast, flat pitch which would suit our play more.
Much better than the Gay Meadow pitch though - with recent wet spell guess the pitch would have been flooded over last few weeks and game today might not even have been on

As with the OP I've mentioned the pitch cutting up before.
Seems to cut up easily, perhaps something to do with root depth/damage/drainage?
If Andy can't talk (not surprising) Jaytee may be a ale to offer an opinion.
He likes a good deep root so I hear...

Sounds like it could be a major technical issue at play here, hence Andy's reluctance to discuss the matter. We have excellent, proven groundstaff at the club. Let's hope we get this resolved over the summer.

Coaches and players of other sides who have visited the GM in the last couple of months have complained at just how bad the pitch it is, so I don't think that MM is exaggerating.
And I thought that he was very careful in not criticising the ground staff, so I didn't see his comments as being disrespectful... rather than just worried... and having good cause as a poor playing surface can be a great equalizer.

The commentators on the Morecambe commentary have just said the pitch looks "pretty damn good" - one of the best they have seen apparently.
Strange.

A pitch needs time to recover at the end of a long season.
Our last home game last season was on 26 April, but we then went on to host England Ladies on 8 May, followed by 12 'Play-on the Pitch' games in the space of 3 days!
I know folk love the chance to do this, but it is reckless not to allow the surface to re-establish, especially if you then decide to play 4 consecutive pre-season friendlies at home in the space of a fortnight, starting on 12 July.
I see an Elton John concert is being staged at the Bescot next year!Don't think our pitch has ever got back to its very best after his visit.
Feel sorry for our groundos.

all to do with the roots of the root and branch then. pitch did not get much of a rest last summer. nothing a good ploughing match won't put right next summer.

It looked ok at first glance, but the ball was bobbling all over it like crazy.
The New Meadow pitch never been a problem before - in fact quite the opposite - so it seems a bit odd that it's playing up now. The weather hasn't been especially bad of for the time of year in Shrewsbury, has it?

Pitch was poor today you could see the players struggled at times judging bounce and run of the ball. Wonder what's changed from previous seasons
