For me seems a waste out wide in a 3 man attack and would much prefer to see him in the centre as a out an out striker. The guy looks a natural goal scorer with a predatory instinct. Thoughts?

He looked poor to me today and I dont think he is as good as Collins or Vernon so I was confused when we brought him in.

Totally agree. The guy is clearly an out and out striker, and find it very odd him playing on the left. It's not like last season where we have to play players out of position, so why put a square peg in a round hole. Now we have four recognised strikers it would be nice to play with two out and out front men, not this odd 3 man front line which no one seems to know what they are doing in it

Wasted out on the left in my opinion, has shown more than Vernon so far.

Not only is he wasted on the left it limits our attacking options on the bench, play wingers on the wing a strikers up front.
It is their preferred position for a reason.

I think there are a fee players playing out of position at the moment. He must bring in some fresh faces. Nobody is playing to their full capabilities at the moment

He looked poor to me today and I dont think he is as good as Collins or Vernon so I was confused when we brought him in. He's our joint top scorer, has notched up an assist and offers trickery, pace and energy up front... I can see exactly why he was brought in.

Must admit I would rather have seen Robinson on the bench yesterday than pulling the lucky tickets out at half time. Surely a bit of muscle is what is needed against some of these league two clubs?

We played the formation yesterday to counteract Newports. That required extra attacking bite in midfield but someone who was good without the ball and protecting our full backs, Mangan is good at that like Milner is at city. Hence why NKP and Grandison were able to get up into good positions do often.
I don't think Mangan out wide is a long term thing.

Our most dangerous player tight in the box and more likely to get an opportunist goal than our other strikers... Agree'd wasted out wide. Would also like to see more use of Andy Robinson late on (if fit ?) when we're dominating yet unable to get that vital goal

Joint top with Collins who I think is a better player, I also think Vernon is too. What I ment is that with Collins, Akpro and Vernon we already have strikers who should be getting a regular place in the team so bringing in a fourth decent striker seemed cofusing at the time because that is a fair amount of competition. So much competition that he is out on the wing which a few have questioned. Still think he was not at his best yesterday, as were one or two others but this discussion is about Mangan.

Well Collins needs someone with him in order to have success. He had Gornell with us, Chris Martin at Swindon, and nobody at Hibs (hence his poor record there). Now we have to find which striker is going to be the player to support Collins, as he is much, much more effective having someone like Gornell with him and he was one of our most valuable players up front, just because of the contribution to Collins he gave. Is that man Andy Mangan? Not based on what I've seen so far, but we shall see.

Interesting.
Ive heard every angle from everyone about how good Mangan is NOT !!! ......not one of you has offered a way forward, in other words this is what Mellon should do. Yes I agree that there is only one place to play Mangan and that is up front with a striker that will head or pass the ball to him in the box. He is the Jimmy Greaves/Keegan type of player. He will score goals in the box but he has be with the right striker ......or at least a guy at the front who will do as he is told and pass the bloody ball to him. The way to put a third striking partner in with them is to play someone behind them to pick up the lose ball/to support. So, there is your solution. Whether Mellon will do that, only he knows.

Is not my opening post stating that Mangan is wasted out wide and would be much better suited as an out an out striker that surely answers a solution? As for playing 3 up top that is the problem not the solution. Away from home i would like to see 5-2-1-2 like today but not at home it leaves to much space in the middle no width what so ever, on a pitch like ours we seem better suited to a 4-4-2 ish style.

Believe we will not be seeing Grant at the Meadow again. Apparently stormed off in a hissy huff when he heard he was not starting. some players attitude and their priveleged position absolutely stink!

Believe we will not be seeing Grant at the Meadow again. Apparently stormed off in a hissy huff when he heard he was not starting. some players attitude and their priveleged position absolutely stink! So we only had 6 players on bench? If he stormed off you would expect this to happen soon after the team was announced to the players giving MM an opportunity to name a replacement. Anyone see him warm up or appear on the pitch at HT? Not sure where Grant will slot in however. MM has clearly stated that he will be utilised out wide and not up front. This would require a change of formation to accommodate him. Indeed we could potentially see a 4-4-2 with both Grant and Mangan deployed as the wingers.

Ginnelly was warming up with the players although not in the squad. Perhaps he was included but too late to replace Grant in the notified 18.
