Seems a bit of a tw@t to me. Not a huge Welbeck fan but still find his comments harsh on a 23 year old who has often been a sub or played out wide. England records, Rooney (41 in 97) and Welbeck (10 in 28), are not dissimilar in terms of goals to game ratio. Welbeck is surely not yet at his peak either, while Rooney is some way past his.
Anyway, seemed a rather mean-spirited and unnecessary thing to say. Don't like people who seek to deflect criticism of themselves by criticising others. He could have just said that they needed to make room for signing Falcao, and the easiest way to do that was the Welbeck to Arsenal deal.

Seems to be too open and possibly not used to English press. Or maybe he just doesn't give a toss. Most important reflection of him has to be results though and he will incredibly look foolish if they don't change

At age 23....
RVP:- 41 club goals, 2 international goals.
Wellbeck:- 38 club goals, 10 international goals.

Proving himself to be the genuine his pedigree suggests. He'll probably turn them around, but it's City and Chelsea's league for the next few seasons.

Always been a bit of a hole and a very combustible character - he doesn't care allegedly, although I suspect he courts the limelight through controversy just like Mourinho. Things either go well or massively tits up with him, there's no middle ground - Barce, for example, he left 3 points above the drop zone in his second spell. Holland didn't qualify for 2002 World Cup. Thankfully, he's starting in that sort of way for United!
As for Welbeck, it'll just motivate him more. I've never really rated him, but that's more to do with his general technique than a scoring record based largely on playing out of position. I have a nagging feeling he might prove me wrong at Arsenal though, and an extra reason to prove himself has been given to him.

I don't see anything mean-spirited about saying Welbeck didn't score enough - it's what every United fan has been saying for some time. Van Gaal doesn't need to deflect criticism of himself because only a fool would be overly critical of a new manager after 4 games, even in the feverish, ridiculously over-hyped world of the Premier League. The weirder comment on Welbeck was surely Wenger's remark that he wouldn't have signed him permanently had he been in the country at the time. I don't know what the context of that comment was but it seems a very odd thing for his new manager to say. Van Gaal has no responsibility for Welbeck, Wenger does. I hope Welbeck succeeds at Arsenal but, like Bradshaw at Salop, he wasn't doing enough at United and his time was up. Same goes for Cleverley. Strange how people are getting so exercised about United moving on some homegrown players. If they'd kept them, there'd be criticism that they weren't making the big changes that were needed. Instead, everyone seems to be fretting about the lack of Mancunians in United's team (unlike the absence of Mancs at City, Scousers at Liverpool or Cockneys at Chelsea, Arsenal or Spurs - which now seems to be expected). How strange.

Always felt a bit for Wellbeck that he didn't always get a run in the side playing his preferred position. Think with a run in the Arsenal side he could develop into a really good player.
Is perhaps a sign of the changing times at United in that for a long time they had great youth players come through the ranks, now that seems to have dried up. Having to buy in players is a new move and might take a bit for supporters to get used to as they pride in the youth set up

Van Gaal is an asshole, shock. Nothing new there, it's line 1 on the CV.

or not his record compares with many within world football.
Will he be a success at United ? Who knows ?
But after the desperation of last year, with a first team squad that clearly wasn't cutting it he needed to act, and to act fast. Make a mark, sign some high profile players and give it a right go. I would suggest he has begun that journey.
As for Welbeck, good luck to the lad, he' s a young English striker and I hope he goes onto be a success at club and international level but his time at United was up and it was right for him to leave. People criticising Van Gaal for this decision should consider this. Would Welbeck have been a regular in any of United's recent great teams. The answers no.

He's always been a prick, remember what he did to Rivaldo?
He'll probably get them back in the top four, though.

I hear that Welbeck's big time attitude hasn't done him any favours
