No mention on here so far about the concert in The Quarry last night. Did anyone go? Were there many there? Suggestions were made that the ticket sales hadnt gone too well. One or two mentions on FB about Mel C, no mention of Marc Almond!

Despite the weather it was an excellent night.
Ruby Turner was, as always, awesome, while it was interesting listening to new arrangements of “Tainted Love” and “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye”.
Mel C doesn’t do it for me and so it proved last night.
The two support acts were different, particularly the first one.

Fortunately, I was at Hyde Park. Neil Young was awesome.

I went to his Christmas show at the Apollo in Manchester last year and I was really impressed. Mel C was so much better than I expected and as for Ruby Turner, well she was just awesome!

Why is Jools Holland so famous and highly regarded in musical circles? Part of a pretty second rate (imo) 70s new wave band that seems to have taken over the TV music scene over the past 10-15 years.
I don't understand what he's done to justify his face on TV.
I don't get it!

With Jools Holland"....it's a no frills programme that has showcased a diverse range of musical talent over the years and of course there is is the excellent annual "Hootenanny" as well

I don't understand what he's done to justify his face on TV. I don't get it! His show is just one of many showcases for new and established bands from around the world. Personally what I like about him are his collaborations with singers and musicians from all genres. Marc Almond and Mel C being classic examples last night. He is a musician’s musician. What I also like about him (and I’ve seen him 4 times) is how it isn’t about him. He showcases the talents of the band and backing singers. How many other performers allow the backing singers solo’s?

Jools is a fine pianist, especially boogie-woogie, a style I'm very fond of.
His big band is excellent also, big bands are so difficult to justify economically that you need a 'name' fronting them to shift tickets.

Nicko has it in a nutshell - he's a musician's musician. He's also a natural, easy going communicator, which is why he's made a successful TV career with "The Tube" and now "Later", possibly the best ever music show (although I'll always have a soft spot for "So It Goes", which could have been rubbish but lives very fondly in my memories).

Music is much like football in that we all have differing opinions. I went to a Lords Test. Match about 10 years back and Jools Holland performed in the lunch break. After a couple of minutes I was left wishing that I was at Old Trafford or Headingly, somewhere I could not hear what was coming out of the speakers.
That is the first and last time time I have ever wished to be at Old Trafford.

It’s more to do with taste I’d have thought.

His current musical output's not particularly to my taste but I've a lot of respect for his musicianship and sheer enthusiasm.
Sometimes he'll produce a stunning collaboration on TV, as with that fabulous performance with Amy Winehouse & Paul Weller.
