I didn't go much last season, just too depressing, it's supposed to entertaiment! Was a bit underwelmed if I'm honest over the appointment of the new manager but not now. He has assembled a team of players good mix of youth and experience and what a show today, if this is what they can do after a short time training together, then this is going to be good!. There was talking all over the park, encouragement and the spirit to work and for each other quite refreshing, they are already a tight unit. I would not want the job of picking the team or choosing which of the trialists you might want to sign, to a man they seem better than for many seasons. Mickey, THANKYOU!!

Today was good, no guarantee that we'll have a great season, but with the players we have I can't see why not?
I think we may have 4 people to thank... Mellon, Jackson, Williams and Roland!!

Why are we thanking MM for winning one pre season friendly? All the initial signs are promising, but we need to keep our feet on the ground until the league season is underway.

I think it's not so much today's win but the complete clear out of the dead wood and a new refreshing positive attitude! A lot of work has gone into such a dramatic change! Collins and Vernon up front... We haven't had a strike partnership of that quality (on paper) since Holt/Walker

Seems like MM has put together a great squad. So nice to see trialists battling for a place in an already strong squad rather than us fans trying to convince ourselves that each one may be the answer to all our problems.

We've played ONE friendly!!! Some of you on here are crazy, you know that right? Almost certainly! Not getting too carried away but I'd say we're in a way better place squad wise than I thought we would be at this point. It may all unravel horribly hence enjoying it now!

I have not been as enthusiastic about the make up of the team since Arthur Rowley's days. From my New Zealand home I have to say that I am so impressed with the style and enthusiasm of MM and the players he has been able to sign due to his vision, I can only hope that everything that MM has envisaged happens and at last we can at last have STFC moving forward in line with all our dreams of a team to be very proud of. I look forward to following the rise of STFC and thank you MM and also to RW for the appointment and for opening the purse strings. GO SHREWSBURY TOWN FC.

the early hopeful signs of in depth success are there. we beat a league 1 club 2-0 , our youth team won. thanks MM and staff for getting our pre season off to a good start. biggest thanks go to Mr Shrewsbury, Rowland for making it all possible.
in spite of 2 crap seasons our gates held up, with a sparkling season, let us hope we can maintain our gates. i will try and do my bit in october at the cheltenham game.
Floreat Salopia! Loggerheads on their way!

I agree some of the expectation is a little OTT but don't rob people of the chance to dream.
To think this season we have a crack at League Two with Collins, Vernon and Akpro up front whereas last season we had Bradshaw and Marsden.

The general sense of excitement can only be a positive and must be harnessed.
So the positivity generated by a meaningless pre – season game all of a sudden doesn’t become so meaningless if it provides momentum.
Compare this to the beginning of last season when many people, including myself, had written off the team before a ball was kicked. No positivity no momentum, it was all so predictable.
This season who knows, but at the moment the wellbeing generated by MM is good and I much rather prefer OTT reactions to pre – season wins than the general sense of doom and gloom from last season.

We must be aiming for the title! We have some decent players, other teams fans think we will finish 1st or 2nd so why can't we dare to dream?
Yes it could go all wrong but which is going to make that more likely a positive or a negative attitude?
I would be happy with play offs but its to early to see how the team will gel.

Think African makes a good point that the way players have been brought in well ahead of the start of the season is a good point. After last season and changing manager it wouldn't have been too surprising to have a small squad at this stage
Way way to early to judge the side and managers tactical and man management just yet though. Good to see optimism after the first PS game, but equally let's not man the lifeboats at the first sign of a dip or set back
November should give us a much clearer idea of where we stand.

Great post Mark. That thread makes sobering reading and I wonder what the reaction would have been if someone had interrupted the feelgood atmosphere with a "we are going to be relegated"!? As it is, kuffdam72 came nearest the mark with his "we will be struggling to name a full 11" - the memories bring a shudder. For all that, I'm as positive as the general mood here seems to be. On paper and on the slight evidence of one friendly, we seem to have a much stronger squad than a year ago - and of course we'll be playing in a lower league. Feet on the ground, ready for a few early setbacks as the team settles down etc - but I'll be shocked if we're not top 7 challengers at least.

From what I'm hearing here, everyone's desparate to be positive and yet trying to get rid of the negativity like wringing a piece of sellotape stuck to the hand.
I said this team would gel quickly and I think we have seen probably 75 per cent of what they are capable of. I know league 2 is very much cut a thrust type football but the pro's we have can mix it as well.
Top five all season.

Mellon is getting some credit for the calibre of players brought in, fair enough in my opinion. It doesn't guarantee you success but it gives you a good chance. A lot of the players have said he has "sold them the vision". My honest question is I wonder how many of these were identified by Jackson in 'The Dossier'?

One thing to add here, it was Chesterfield's third PSF and our first. They should have therefore being two games in front of us in the match-fitness and cohesion stakes. It looked the other way round.
A Chesterfield fan came in the Prince of Wales beforehand and travelled down and back with us. He was very impressed by how we played whilst, suddenly fearing for his own team's chances next season.
Yes, don't read too much into friendlies, we all know how they can totally deceive as a guidance to a teams chances come the big kick-off, however we looked like a team throughout the game and MM, based on that will have some lovely selection dilemmas to contend with.

We do seem to have signed / got on trial a few that Jacko and the rest of existing staff would've know about.

pre season friendlies are as much about team bonding, and our all new squad will need plenty of that prior to beating wombles 3-1.

Well, feeling very justified with original post, it's just getting better isn't it. A real buzz around club and to a lesser degree Shrewsbury itself. I've seen a few matches, cannot make all but looking good I think. Going today, already booked for Carlisle and Newport, would of booked for Norwich but system showing 'sold out' surely not?.

Just think Roland you could be getting a thread thanking you for appointing MM and turning things round when you get rid of that ruddy lion
you don't have to wait for the inevitable result of the badge vote, just do it you know you'll have to anyway

Only go when we're winning, great support... (awaits the normal reactions) Some people support football for different reasons. Some are just hardcore, some just want entertainment, others go for their loved ones or whatever, but if you are paying quite a lot of money to travel every week and in some cases twice then don't expect everyone to be happy about that. Obviously I prefer it when they're winning but I went to see them a lot last season and nothing will change, but I accept some people might not want or be able to. They're still fans.

as a thank you , I would love to see from afar a bumper gate today. possible, with 1000+ coming from Luton. my thanks go to Roland as well for his Root and Branch which was responsible for MM and MW coming to the club.
we now have an excellent manager, asst and coaching staff and a quickly bonding squad fed by excellent results created by their efforts.
I would love Roland to be surprised by a 6000+ gate, in my book he and the club deserve nothing less.
Roland change that "Ruddy awful Badge! before any of this praise goes to your head!
