I don't know how much use a driving test is in determining the suitability of someone to be on the road.
A young friend of the family who recently passed was very upset about gettting a ticket for doing 86mph on the M6.
"I didn't deserve that", he told us, "after all, I was in the outside lane".

3rd time for me, 1st time I had 3 major faults and a lot of minors. 2nd time they changed the car just 2 days before the test and I just couldn't get used to it so that was a write off. 3rd test I had a Rover Metro (which suited me) and passed even though I got all the questions wrong after the test.

First time with just a couple of minor faults. Not sure I'd consider myself a brilliant driver though. Just did what I had to to pass.
I'll never forget the feeling of driving on my own for the first time... How weird did that feel!??

It was 3rd time for me The first time I was no where near ready, I had recently joined the RAF in 1977 and wanted to get mobile asap. My 2nd test was on the day in 1978 Margaret Thatcher was newly elected as Prime Minister and I failed for driving to fast in a 30 limit! 3rd test I breezed through a few weeks later May 1979 how can you forget! I remember well because that night comming out of Hull at 1.00 a.m. on the elevated section of the M6 over the Humber I hit a sheet of ice, snaked for about 300 yards to come to rest against the crash barrier 300ft up! Looked in the rear view mirror to see a jack knifed petrol tanker heading straight for us. Somehow the driver managed to stop with his cab resting against the bonnet. We both got out, fell over on the ice when he grabed me in a hug to say 'I thought i was going to knock you off the bridge'. That night they closed the section when a lorry did go of the bridge at the exact spot... Oh it was a 1977 Morris Marina 1.8 TC coupe in matalic green..... First time, though I had real trouble with one of the questions.
"What would you do if a car approaching you flashed its lights?"
I tried everything.
1.Telling me to proceed with a right turn.
2. Telling me to come out into the traffic flow.
3. Telling me to pull out of a slip road or switch lanes.
4. Warning me about a speed trap/police car ahead.
5. Telling me my lights weren't on, or an indicator was, or a dead body was on my roof.
6. Even saying hello to me if it was a friend's car.
All of which happens in real time driving (well, apart from the dead body on the roof).
'Nothing' was the correct answer.

It also didn't help my practice for the test that my driving instructor had a stutter, so the emergency stop usually half the length of the street.
