Me and the dragon were first time passers. That's not a boast. I've always taken the view, that if you were an examiner, who would you want to go out with again. Someone who drives like a lunatic, or someone who is steady and careful.
The dragon had a Yank driving instructor, so when the examiner asked her to check her mirrors and drive away when it was safe, I think he was a tad taken aback when she shouted, "OK **********s we're burning rubber".
Any 4 or 5 time examiner botherers on here?

4th time for me. I had a 12 month break between 3rd and 4th attempt, with no lessons. But that was a long time ago.

I was fortunate enough to break my arm the day before my test. My instructor reckoned I would have failed if I had taken it then. I passed the rearranged test about four months later, after nearly crashing on my pre-test.
If I had to take it today I would fail, mostly due to nearly 30 years of bad habits.

Passed mine at first time of asking, after being hit from behind by a bus in the pre-test!

1st time, even after stalling at the traffic lights having just turned right out of the test station in Newtown, at the start of my test.

2nd time. First time driving school car broke down and imagine the scene with me and the examiner pushing the car into a layby. My instructors face was a picture when he saw me walking back to the test centre with the examiner minus the car. Second test I had the same examiner. He never mentioned the previous test but I am sure he never forgot it.

Second time. Drove beautifully the first time before cutting a driver up at a roundabout in an enthusiastic attempt to prove I wasn't 'hesitant' as the instructor warned me. Passed the next time six days later whilst compiling a list of minor faults as long as my arm.
Also had to squint very heavily to be able to read the car number plates at the start of the test thus reminding me to get my eyes checked.
Not my finest hour.

5th
to be honest the first three were a distaster
The first was by far the worst culminating in getting stuck behind a parked bus by SCAT panicking, trying to over take then learching into the other side of the road with oncoming traffic... Stalling... then starting the car in gear.
The test was then terminated, I had to park the car up across the road from SCAT and they guy hadto walk back to test center and my instructor had to walk to me to sort me out!
The next two were just nerves which caused fails for to many minors on one particular point, lane discipline, ballsed up a reverse park.
4th was going so well, had been out almost the total time and was heading back down London Road towards the test center with literally 3 minutes of the test to go, when I for no reason started doing 40 in a 30... once he told me to slow down... instant fail!
5th time put it all together finally and got through it
A costly 6 months though.

First time of asking after a stall during the test which convinced me I'd failed and subsequently made me more relaxed.
A few weeks prior to my test I was the driver when my instructor was being assessed for his instructors licence renewal - now that was nervy! He was the only top grade instructor in town and made sure I knew how important it was that he kept it that way!

Second - failed the first by spinning the wheels (in a Metro !) pulling out onto the A5 from Sutton Farm.

My wife passed first time - I think it makes you a better driver if you fail at least once. Second for me.

I passed both mine first time. Car and motor bike, although I fell off my motor bike during my test but it was out of sight of the examiner.

Serious questions; Were there any other cars on the road, and what car did you drive in to pass your test? Oh, and are you still driving now?

Eagerly awaiting Windys response on here as I know three other ex Army people who never took an official test but drove RQ 100 yards across the camp in a landrover when asked to and were given a certificate which does the job apparently !

Ford Popular, 5737 DA.
I'll bet Dave Anderson or Darren Ackroyd would give me good money for that plate now.

it would be nice for all of us to reminisce about our early motoring and the cars we drove.
jt was your ford pop about 1960 similar to the 100e ford anglia/prefect and replaced by the new ford 105 with slanting back window?

First attempt after about 10 lessons. Thought I messed it up when I stalled the car at the Abbey Foregate traffic lights on the way back to the test centre. My legs were like jelly after the test when I got out of the car!

3rd time of asking for me.
1st time at 17, thought I knew it all and had only a couple of lessons, failed miserably and an easy decision for the examiner, did't bother then for a couple of years and then did it again. Drove very well on my second test and was confidently expecting the pass when the examiner said ' I'm sorry Mr James, you have failed to reach the standard required " to which I replied " you've got to be joking" and then proceeded to rant and argue with the bloke although his debrief until he just told me told me to leave the vehicle and he would give his comments to my driving instructor !! Straightforward pass on the 3 rd time of asking.
like bluestone I also fell off my bike on my motorcycle test. Absolutely chucking it down and I braked too hard at the Monkmoor Road/Abbey Foregate Lights and ended up sprawled across the road with the instructor on the bike behind just shaking his head. Fail.

Yes, it was the 100 E.
It used to burn oil and smoke like hell, both through the exhaust and in the car itself. I had to have the window open if I went faster than 40mph. I gave a friend a lift to play cricket. We were in convoy to the game. The lead car was travelling at about 50mph. The Popular wasn't used to going that fast, and belched out copious amounts of smoke in protest. My mate was screaming that we were on fire, but of course I knew that wasn't the case.
I'd roll into the filling station and say, "3 gallons please.....oh, and a gallon of petrol".

1st time and the examiner was a Wrexham fan - clearly wrote off me hitting the curb on leaving the test centre at the start of the exam as nerves only!

First, but was taking lessons for what seemed like an eternity. First time for me but as there was a long running Civil Servant strike that year I must have had 20 or so lessons before I could take the test !! Triumph Toledo for me !
