This is a lesson for anybody who thinks it's worth gambling the future of their club on promotion. I'd have them down as one of the es relegation favourits next season along with other financial basket cases Coventry and Oldham.

Estimated 4 million playing budget to be halved to bring it in line with other clubs in the league.

Good to see some sense prevail at Swinedon although I think the Football league need to be more pro-active in stopping clubs overspending before they get into financial trouble and need bailing out.

I think they both thought they were promotion favourites at the start of 2012/13. Next season will be quite different for both of them and Sky Blues currently have nowhere to play. I think we're doing ok in comparison.

Great news for fair competition. They have a lot of high earners so even if they sell a few then their wages will look lopsided as they have players on a lot more money than they truly deserve and they'll need to replace the players they sell on much lower wages. Interesting times ahead and whoever their manager is next season is going to have a tough job. My heart bleeds for them..!

Financial good sense and Swindon Town in the same sentence. Who could have seen that one coming? A week of footballing surprises continues ...

I hope this does not save them. from getting relegated! they still won't have a small budget. See if there fans are still as cocky now! I'm so glad they bottled the play offs :-)

Any chance of Collins returning? Or will his wage demands be too high?

To be fair, a lot of members saw this coming months ago. Surprising news it is not. How could a League 1 club survive on the transfer fees and wages Swindon were paying? it had car crash written all over it. Expect Collins to be sold on, as i believe McDonald does not rate him that highly. Would i want him back here, definitely not, he's had his chance, did o.k. but i believe there are better forwards out there and at a cheaper price tag.

I did'nt really rate Collins all that highly. Yes, he scored goals for us, but to me he had no guile, no natural instinct he just smashed the ball as hard as he could towards goal. Plus, he was'nt always aware of what was around him. Effective up to a point, but not what i would call a naturally gifted footballer, but did well with the little skill he had. Di Canio did'nt always play him in the first 11, and he was usually subbed around the 60-70 min mark or earlier for Rooney when he did get a start.

So Swindon spend a huge amount of money last season and the season before, to end up in massive debt only to start next season on a level playing field to us. dear oh dear...

Collins for Wolves? Wouldn't surprise me (& Doyle must surely be leaving).

Bristol City's overall playing/staff budget was almost £19m last season. Gulp.

One dimensional, no guile, no natural instinct... just smashed the ball towards goal... you forgot to say they often go in! We'd have had fewer sweaty palms this season with Collins up front.

I have to agree that his goals per game ratio for us was quite good, not so good for Swindon but then again he did not get to play many games for them. If he added a bit of composure to his game he may well have got to double figures, but he obviously found it harder in League 1 with Swindon. If he had had the composure he lacks, against us when Swindon came to our place, he may well have scored instead of ballooning the ball over the cross-bar. Not for me , thanks. Thats not to call him poor, his work-rate was very good, but i just feel that we need better in this League.

I know what you mean Billy, I just fear for our recruitment policy of late, and GT's recent observations regarding player costs etc. Given the choice of Collins now, or 'sit it out' and see what comes out in the wash over the summer, I'd sign him tomorrow and be assured someone that can find the net.

Talk of Collins is obsolete given the hike in wages he to move to Swindon I suspect.

Wasn't McDonald the youth team / reserve team manager at Villa for years, i.e. where Collins started his career

Keep the hate alive Slops, you deplorable bunch of no marks. Flunk your lines next season with the geriatric in charge.
Dosser is gonna get ya in Sainsburys car park. He saw off 20 of your dimwits and he'll be back for more, cowards!
