My laptop has a cracked screen, a couple of hairline cracks and a semi-major one in the corner. It has had these cracks for a month or two. Yesterday it completely cut out (i am borrowing a housemates spare) I let everything cool down then plugged in the power addapter thing. The LED light lit up showing that it had power, but as soon as I plugged it into the laptop the LED light started blinking and it started making a strange bleeping noise. Despite the battery being fully charged it doesnt turn on by itself. I went into Dixons and they said that the probable reason the laptop wouldnt work (and reason they wouldnt reaplce it there and then) was in all likelhood because the screen was heavily cracked. Is this true??? As a result I have had to phone up coverplan, who annouce that it will probably be replaced and that the engineers will sort out the screen (regardless of whether i want it sorting out) and thus it will probably be replaced, seeing my cover plan annulled and me being given vouchers towards a new one. So it appears that I have lost all my music (not the end of the world), virtually all of my uni work, and various letters/correspondance files. is there also anything I can do about this, the coverplan people said it would all be lost and that i should make back ups later (I cant, the bloody thing wont work!!!! ) where do i stand, what can i do? cheers rob

if you can get any life back in it, plug in an external monitor and start backing up if its dead then your data may already have been lost failing that take the hard drive out don't ask me how though i'm sure a new shiny laptop will soon get you over the fact that all your old stuff has gone

cheers pilch. I'd take the harddrive out but it invalidates the coverplan. I'm more worried about the anullment of my cover plan as it still had 15 months left on it, and when this laptop is replaced I will be on my fourth in just under two years

erm well laptop 1. sent back within 27 days because i spilt a pint of water over the screen laptop2. sent back within 3 months because i got back from a night out slightly under the influence and knocked the laptop off my desk as i walked past it, knocking it to the floor. Resulted in 3 broken usb ports. laptop3. erm cracked the screen quite badly somehow, guess it was putting a thing folder of A4 uni notes on the typing pad before pushing the screen down, also made worse by the fact itr was being carried in a rucksack. Oh and it wont load up. As you can see coverplan is essential ;D cheers pilch. i'm hoping for a 2.6GH, 40 gb farddrive and 512 ram. probably wont get it mind. Do you know where the vouchers can be used? or does it have to be dixons, curries and/or pc world?

Rob - did your parents never teach you to look after your posessions?

It has to be one of the Dixons group
I had a laptop under my hous einsurance and they dealth exclusively with the dixons group for their cover
It mean when someone broke into work and stole my computer I got vouchers to the value of a replacement
So I got a desktop PC, a hoover, a widescreen tv and a fridgefreezer instead

Your data should be safe rob, take it to a local independant pc store and they will be able to back up all the data files for you, and it wont cost the earth (£30 -£40 probably).
