Just seen the goals.
Beaten too easily for the 1st. Possibly could have got to the 2nd despite the big deflection.
However, Neal's performance for the reserves in midweek didn't inspire much confidence so I doubt there will be a change.
New keeper for next year looks a certainty though.

Don't disagree with that summary NW but would add I have felt that we needed a better keeper all season, however we have what we have and will be as supportive as I can behind whoever is in goal and the rest of those selected

We cannot mess at this stage of the season ----------but if we do go up then both our decidedly average keepers will be shown the door.

Not see yesterday's game so can't say much but I thought has been pretty solid since getting back in the side He was even our best player at Torquay I thought By the sounds of it no one deserves credit for yesterday

having just watched the goals i cant see how any blame can be given to smith
the first goal is too inconclusive to see if he could have done better and the 2nd was a wicked deflection in which he almost actually got there

From where I was stood on the terrace, we were right behind the ball, and it went straight through his hands.

I've been pleased with Smith, and despite everyone criticizing our keepers there isn't too many in league 2 I'd take over them, Tommy Lee, Nikki Bull, Andy Warrington, maybe Barry Roche but there isn't too many I'd take over Smith.

there's rummours that Tommy Lee isn't going to sign for Chesterfield next season, regardless of what division their in,
would people like to see him?
I'd personally love to see David Button back,
with both Smith and Neal contracted until 2012 it may well be hard to get either to leave this summer

We wouldn't, but we are a league 2 club, and maybe we have been spoilt with decent goalkeepers in recent years, but that's not to say the two we've got are more than adequate at this level.

I'd be happy to see Smith as number 1 next season. Since his return to the team, he hasn't really done anything wrong, Bradford the main fault he's made. Certainly improving all the time and will get better.
For me definitely most improved player this season.

If we go up, or maybe even if we dont, i dont believe either Smith or Neal are good enough, they both seem decent lads and full of passion for the club, Smith shows it slightly more in his body language, but maybe neither is technically good enough for the league above.

Goalkeeping is not our biggest problem, in this division or the one above. Anyone seen Joe Lewis at Peterborough recently? Haven't seen either of our keepers make mistakes quite that bad.

Seriously what are some of you seeing? Smith has done well since coming back into the team, improving every week in my eyes. We do not need a new keeper! The team as a whole were off form on Saturday, don't use the keeper as a scapegoat, he made some great saves which could have kept us in it if the rest of the team performed. Keep up the good work Ben, ignore the 'fair weather fans' they don't know what they're talking about! a fair weather fan that has been to every game this season bar 3? Smith has done well since coming back into the team, but he didn't have the best game at aldershot and it is a topic of debate whether he would be good enough in the league above. Get off your high horse.

As someone said we have been spoilt in recent years with good keepers Daniels, Button, Phillips so they are all a hard act to follow. I think Smith has done well since coming in for Neal so stick with him.

And neither did any of the other players, they were all bloody appauling but are you discussing getting rid of them for someone else... No... It's always the same with keepers. I'm sure your aware that the lads probably read these forums, we aren't exactly encouraging! Smith has done well, maybe could have done better on Saturday but so could everyone else. If he played like that week in week out then creating this thread would be justified but it's a one off. On Saturday he will play well and then you'll be singing his praises... Loyal fans? I think not! Try to get behind the lads, they aren't going to be changed so be happy with and support what we have instead of knocking them down. Rant over. One of the possible reasons I focus more on goalkeepers is because that is my position? I am not getting on his back, as I have said, he has done very well since coming back in, and despite what I considered a poor performance on Saturday, I will give EVERY player my full backing on Saturday and for the remaining 5 games this season. I think you need to chill out

I admit to being disappointed with the first goal on Saturday. Being directly in line with the flight of the ball, the keeper in me was deciding whether to catch the ball, or push it to safety around the post. I think that given the crowded box, I had decided on option 2 when the ball squirmed into the net. I screamed "how the hell did that get in"? The other bloomer he has made recently resulted in the Bradford goal. Having said that, he has has several good games recently and all keepers make mistakes, even England's No. 1. The quality of a keeper could possibly be judged by how many/few mistakes are made over a season. As others have said, the whole team were under par on Saturday, and all 3 goals could have been avoided. Raven got turned too easily for the first, Herd was given time and space 25 yards from our goal for the second, when he should have been closed down, whilst Sadler upended their guy for the penalty, after being left exposed in a one on one situation, from a long ball.

Sums it up perfectly for me! Not picking Smith out from the rest, just commenting on the goal and wondering if he would be our number one in the league above (if we get there)

The way i see it is Smith has saved us more points than he's cost us this season. Every keeper is going to let a soft goal in now and then, but generally been well impressed with the lad

I think Smith has done OK but whichever league we're in next season I would like to see a new number 1. However I realise it could be difficult to ship either Smith or Neal out in the summer. To be honest I'm not bothered which one goes if we get in a replacement.

Some really good saves but also a couple of moments of hesitation between him and Sharpes when a call from the keeper early would have solved it.

In fairness to him, a couple of excellent saves, but as Ant says still a couple of hairy moments due to a lack of communication!

Thought he had a great game, Sharps let him down in the first half though - lucky their forward (think it was Elding) was offside.

Smith then stopped, but thankfully there was an offside. As I say, couple of excellent saves, just to work on the communication!
