Too many of these "big names" weighing the team down.

Thought he and England played fairly well first half tonight, passing was much better and had a better tempo to the game, especially first half. Find it odd that people question weather Rooney should be in the England team when he is one of if not the best English player.
As for having to many big names.. Spain, Argentina and Brazil seem to cope okay with big names in there squad, why does it mean we have to many 'big names'?
The problem is that all english players play in the english league and have no idea of other counties style of football, where as all other top nations have players from all leagues around europe and the world, which makes it easier for players to adapt to different styles, we can only play one way.

Totally agree, you look at other succesful nations they have players playing in a range of leagues so they know different styles of football. EnglaND ALL PLAY THE SAME STANDARD OF FOOTBALL WEEK IN WEEK OUT

Can the top players earn considerably more money abroad than here? Rooney may only be 25 but he has been playing top flight football for 7 years. I suggest that physically - unlike Beckham and Giggs - he isn't built for a long career. There isn't that gap between Rooney and the rest now.

Villa mate said to me that he was very good in their game against Manchester the other night, said he looked back to his best. So maybe we just need to sit tight and hope he comes good again for England. As for the big names, I don’t recall one big name from any side in the World Cup having a standout tournament. I don’t think Rooney was alone in that…Messi for example, anonymous. Rooney still has a part to play with England for me anyhows, I think it would be crazy not to play him.
It’s the manager that is still my greatest concern…

If he's playing at the top of his game, of course we do.
But that one last night and through last year? God no. Shouldn't be there as a name, all of them should just be on merit. Yes, it really is just that obvious.

He is a decoy, whilst the opposition have 6 men marking him the others sneak off and score ;-)

It’s the manager that is still my greatest concern… Messi was anonymous in the world cup?? Thought he was excellent, and did everything but score - i think he hit the woodwork multiple times. I do remember the big names like Xavi, Villa and Iniesta being outstanding too On the subject of England, the problem with Rooney is where exactly do you play him? And the fact that England managers have in the past attempted to fit as many big names in the team as possible (Rooney, Lampard and Gerrard), rather than thinking about the team. For example, Rooney for my mind is not a lone striker and should not be used as one - I think he would be far better deployed 'in the hole', but that would put him in Gerrard or Lampard's preferred position. One thing that Wednesday's game demonstrated was that Wilshire looks a stunning prospect and should be first choice midfield. However, even before the game I couldn't understand why Terry was picked alongside Dawson. From my perspective, I see those two as very similar players (both the stopper type of defender) - Dawson is going to be Terry's replacement - but what we need to find is Ferdinand's replacement.

messi is a good example
v greece, greece had one game plan, stop messi they did argentina had other game plans and won 2-0
england had one plan at the world cup leave it to rooney
it never happened and with no decent plan b it was game over

Crouch and Bent will probably fit the team better.
Maybe Carroll though he's just come back from an injury and liverpool don't want him to play.
Edit: Crouch isn't even on the bench, that's kinda odd.

If any one other than Reg had raised this post, I would have said it may have been a reasonable post. But we all know Reg hates Rooney and anything Man U.

A double sending off would have been brilliant. Could have finished 0 -6 then. Still Shreks booking makes him unavailable for the game against the Cuckoo Clock makers in June so we'll find out then
