"I thought the ref was decent tonight,i thought it was a pen as it looked really clumsy" You must be being sarcastic - Surely not the issue when there was a clear foul on Ainsworth by Geogahan in the build up to the pen. My other issues with the ref: -Booked Sharps for a perfectly good challenge -Booked Wright for minor foul. - Ben Smith was booked for celebrating the goal in an incident Richards should have been booked for manhandling Smith. - No Vale player seemed to get booked despite persistent fouls yet simliar fould were resulting in bookings for us. You must be being sarcastic - Surely not the issue when there was a clear foul on Ainsworth by Geogahan in the build up to the pen. There was not a clear foul on Ainsworth in the build up to the goal, Lionel was trying to stop Geogahan getting to the ball, thus blocking him, Sharpsy was having a right go at Lionel before the penalty, gesturing that he should have come to the ball as it was obvious to everyone else that it didn't have enough pace on it!My other issues with the ref: -Booked Sharps for a perfectly good challenge from behind!-Booked Wright for minor foul. Wrighty knew exactly what he was doing, knew the player was getting away from him, what I would call a professional foul- Ben Smith was booked for celebrating the goal in an incident Richards should have been booked for manhandling Smith. Ben Smith was booked for provoking the crowd, a gesture that was spotted by the lino and got a deserved yellow, although it was one of them ones that I was pleased to see and would happily pay his fine for him!Apart from the penalty, I thought the ref had a good game, it does make me chuckle when I read some of the things on here about the refs performance and I actually wonder whether or not people know the laws themselves or even refereed a match???

We committed 14 fouls to Port Vales 8 and got 4 bookings to Port Vale's 1. Some of our bookings were ridiculous and I was left very disappointed with all 3 officials come the end of the game

I was near the family stand so not near to the action but it didn't look like a pen - I'll reserve further judgement until we see a replay. It was a massive decision by the ref. Regardless though I suspect these things even themselves out over the season and I look forward to us getting a dodgy free kick or pen (or both in the coming weeks..... cant remember the last time we had a penalty so hope it starts evening up soon Ant maybe if we got into the box more often to get fouled we may get penalties. Its not a rare occassion for Town to have no shots on target because we panic on the ball and just blast them from outside the box. The ref may have been poor, but you can't blame him entirely. We should have defended, attacked, played better.

But we didn't loose and now you're now in the bizzare position of hoping Hereford [somehow], beat us at Vale park to stop us from passing you........... Fair play pvfc61, you do make me chuckle...

I wish you were right Windsor jnr but lately we seem very reluctant to shoot outside the box, we either waste the chance or pass it back.

Stuart Dunn and Steve Cross were commenting just before the penalty what a good game the ref was having. They both agreed that it wasn't a penalty, but apart from that he had a good game (little consolation though!) Can't agree. The free kick and yellow card count was too one sided. I don't think it was bias at all but I thought he had a very poor game. Gave some very soft free kicks throughout and more yellows than were justified. Still ridiculous for the Football League to appoint him for this game, even if he'd handled it well. As I said to my Derby supporting friend, imagine a Notts ref giving Forest a dubious late penalty to save the game at Pride Park. Should never be in that position.

Not quite sure where you lot are getting your information from but after a very quick search I have found that Mr Gibbs is, in fact, from Solihull! Now take them blue-and-amber tinted spectacles off, stop thinking the football league were wrong in appointing him and come up with another stupid reason as to why you think we were wronged last night! Another very very poor ref who was EXTREMELY GULLIBLE when Vale decided to their Olympic diving impressions on NUMEROUS occasions !
A shocking decision to book Sharps for an excellent tackle !
The total inability to consult with his linesman when awarding the penalty . If he had then the linesman would have told him with his clear view it wasn't a penalty however the ref who couldn't see the tackle gave it !
And , Yes it does make a difference when a ref makes awful decisions . It changes massively the result . Anybody can get throw in and corner decisions right but it takes a good ref to get the games BIG decisions right and so he falls along with virtually every other ref i have seen this season rubbish .
What makes them so gullible ?
Are these the people that fall for junk mail scams or give their money to a Nigerian dictator who will give them 40 million quid in return ?
Another shocking example of a completely useless ref !

Im a grade 6 referee, and referee county games and without sounding to bias, the fouls he was giving in the 50/50 challenges were ridiculous, and for booking Sharpe's was total stupid, couldn't see the pen,[sitting in south stand] and it was a corner not a throw in, it seem every time a port vale player was touch they went down and the ref was sold on all there fouls.AND i do know the rules

More interesting is to google "referee Phil Gibbs" and you will find he has been in no end of trouble with quirky decisions in only 2 1/2 years. Interestingly (or not as the case may be), his first ever Football League game was our 4-0 victory over Macc in 2008.

Wasn't at the game last night but it seems that the usual suspects are complaining about the ref. It seems that whenever the town fail to get all three points it's always the refs fault. I wonder where these blue and Amber tinted bespectacled fans were when Davies and Holt were gaining penalties and free kicks by conning the referee.
It is time that fans recognised that the real problems at the moment are that we do not get enough bodies driving into the box and our delivery from set pieces is poor.

Bit of a mixed bag. I thought he did ok first half. The free kick for the Vale was correct (we defended it very poorly). Second half, I thought he got worse as the game progressed & unfortunately it looks like he got the big decision wrong. From a distance, it looked like a pen but I don't see how he could give it with any authority since he didn't appear to have a clear view of the incident (the lino should have done but he didn't flag?). I presumed he booked Sharps for coming through the player from behind.

The pen was the right call. Sadler (?) plays the man first with a barge into the back, then collects the ball. That is a foul. Cry about it as much as you like, had it been in the other box you would have been screaming for it to be given and I dare say that deep down most of you know that.
The ref got the keeper yellow card incorrect. He should have been red carded for violent conduct as proven by photographic evidence after the event which shows a clear kick aimed at Marc Richards.
Instead of moaning about officials how about having a moan about the lad who missed a free header from 6 yards immediately after the penalty. He cost you the game with a glaring miss.

Oh, thank the Lord, an unbiased view - thanks for clearing all that up. The main point - apart from Pope going down like he'd been shot - was that the ref was in no position to make a decision. He chose to ignore that and the fact that his assistant had a better view, giving the penalty immediately. I'm not blaming the ref for the result, we should have won it by a couple of clear goals even though Vale came for the draw. It is just annoying that he made the biggest decision of the night without seeing it properly.

The fact he gave the correct decision is therefore all the more to be applauded.
His view isn't fully obscured by the way. The video shows him looking around one player, however he is looking fully at the incident. The ref's assessor will, I guarantee, back the decision.
He may however not be so kind when judging the violent conduct offence committed by your keeper as arguably that's a red card.
Call it bias if it makes you feel better but he got the penalty right.

Having said that, i dont think he got this particular decision horribly wrong, it wasnt clear cut but weve all seen em given. I think yr right, we would of all been screaming for a penalty if it had been down the other end.

Having said after the game I would wait until I had seen it on video I now have and think it was marginal but can see why it was given the positive thing was how well Ainsworth and Collins their goals the negative thing was how poor the defending was for the first goal

It looked dubious from my position, but if the Ref and linesmen form a team, why did he not consult the linesman. He did not have a clear view of the incident, so must consult. We only have ourselves to blame though, the chances we had especially in the second half with headers, and the p**s poor defending for their first goal. Ref overall was very finicky and had a poor game. We are still in a good position and will finish above Fail, no problem.

According to Sadler, many of the Vale players admitted it was not a penalty.

All sorts of rumours flying around re who has said what, Vale players, the Asst Ref and so on.
Having seen the incident again I can see why it was given. Still not convinced the ref had the best view of it though.

The ref's assessor can think what he likes about Ben Smith's coming together with that little angel Richards (retribution for what he did to Luke Daniels a couple of years ago). The fact that the ref positive action at the time giving Smithy a yellow card means nothing more can be done. Been watching football long saintvaliant?

Anyone in any doubt about the penalty decision should watch GT's pre-Torquay interview on Shrews Player (thirty seconds in). It shows the incident clearly from behind the goal. Shocking decision by an unsighted ref who was too far behind the play and struggling to see around several players. If a foul occurred, it was surely Pope running into Sadler from behind and then falling to the ground. Think the assistant on the east stand side should have been stronger and helped the ref to correct his mistake. All too often assistant referees seem to concur with referees when they are in a far better position to see the action. Perhaps their performance is assessed or commented on in the referee's after-match report? I ask this question because how often do we see an assistant actually, pro-actively, attempt to alter a referee's decision?

It's rare the assistants get involved which always bemuses me.
Good hightlights on the shrewsplayer article you mention - good defending by Sadler and very unlucky to be punished.
Just hope we put it behind us and get on with it on Saturday.

When I re-watched the incident on the BBC website, it looked a foul.
However, slow motion and from behind the goal, it is clear that Sadler has got in front of Pope, is about to play the ball (or shield it to Smith) and the Pope goes into him.
Not a penalty, however, saying that, can also see why the ref has given it from his admittedly poor angle.
