Was OK in the 1st half, however second half seemed blind to the fact Ainsworth was being held every minute!
Just where do they get these refs from?

Never a penalty in a million years, if anything it was a free kick to us. The referee was apparently from Stafford so that should sum it up I think.

From Staffordshire as well, if we like a conspiracy.
Terribl performance, it's not the first time this season I've come away from a game thinking that the ref has given EVERY fifty-fifty against us.

You must be being sarcastic - Surely not the issue when there was a clear foul on Ainsworth by Geogahan in the build up to the pen.
My other issues with the ref: -Booked Sharps for a perfectly good challenge -Booked Wright for minor foul. - Ben Smith was booked for celebrating the goal in an incident Richards should have been booked for manhandling Smith. - No Vale player seemed to get booked despite persistent fouls yet simliar fould were resulting in bookings for us.

And what about that daft keeper bragging off to Richards and getting himself booked when it went 2-1? BET he felt a FOOL minutes later when Rico smashed the penalty past him!?.........

I was near the family stand so not near to the action but it didn't look like a pen - I'll reserve further judgement until we see a replay. It was a massive decision by the ref. Regardless though I suspect these things even themselves out over the season and I look forward to us getting a dodgy free kick or pen (or both in the coming weeks.....

Don't care who he supports - he was weak and gave us nothing. It definitely was not a penalty - it happened just in front of us and fans who I have sat with for more years than I care to admit to and who never criticise refs were adamant no penalty and we should have had a free kick. Yet again we are penalised against Port Vale by ineffectual officials.

Actually I don't believe this thing about evening out over a season - I've yet to see it.

We have had one penalty all season, and we missed it.

Turner has seen it back on DVD and said Sadler was infront of the player who went down, the ref was unsighted but gave it, and the lino even commented to our players he thought there wasnt a foul?!!! Anyhow, what we have learnt from this (the penalty, the very very cheap free kick for the first goal) is that throwing yourself to ground forces the officials into some very hard dodgy decisions. Our team isnt quite that manipulative to try that route. Thought we played some really good football tonight, looked to win it, forced them to change their shape and should have won.

I think the ref stepped out onto the pitch with his rose-tinted local lad glasses on

Sadly I think you have a point Tex. When Davis went through at the end with Geohagen by his side one of my immediate thoughts was 'go down lad' - sad really.

Also in the last 5 mins the ref gave us a throw when it was a blatant corner between family stand and South stamd, from in block 8 it was a stone wall corner.
I think it was the ref who gave it as a throw in as I could seem him gesturing it to the linesman.

their first goal came from a soft free kick i think the blame is more with us for giving it away than the ref for that one
the pen i think was scs, as i've mentioned hes just too clumsy, a dream come true for opposition in the box

Can't have felt as foolish as Richards and the other muppets doing their stupid goal celebration (that almost makes the Hughesy look classy) a few seconds before Ainsworth equalised.

From the other side of the pitch, but it looked like a throw-in to me Yes, a throw in and I think he was just checking the assistant agreed. He was still a poor ref though - gave a lot of very soft free kicks a second or two after the Vale fans shouted for them. Was he really from Stafford? That's unbelievable. Even if he'd been competent it's wrong for the League to put that pressure on the ref. But when he's as poor as Gibbs was, well you just despair. The regular armwork on Sadler was ignored all game but we seemed to concede a free kick whenever we challenged for a 50-50 ball. I'm resisting the wish that our players would go to ground in and around the box a bit more readily - but it's getting to be a close call now. A cynic would argue that a few yellows for simulation would be heavily outweighed by some soft decisions in our favour. As was said, Davis could easily have gone down with that late run. A ref as poor as Gibbs would probably have bought it.

Look, WHOEVER the ref is you can't beat us, face the FACT and move on? I understand Turner was actually PLAYING the last time that happened in1978! With that in mind IF we miss out on a auto spot see you at Old Trafford hopefully........

Well we were on course to beat you but then the REF gave you a goal, so if we had a good ref who could actually spot a blatant dive you would have gone back to burSLUM a defeated team.

Stuart Dunn and Steve Cross were commenting just before the penalty what a good game the ref was having. They both agreed that it wasn't a penalty, but apart from that he had a good game (little consolation though!)

I doubt the ref had a bias, he was a little inconsistent second half and I am sure when he reviews the penalty he gave, he will admit he was a little unsighted and should not have given it but heh guys thats football...good game though quite entertaining and still plenty to play for.

Shouldn't be Ref of a big game. Got fooled by their shouts behind the goal. Seemed to know he got it wrong, his face had a guilty expression.
