5 of us walking down Smithfield road last night towards the salopian All in agreement to an accident waiting to happen re the concrete monstrosity dumped in the middle of the road near the suspension bridge
1 hour later we come out of the salopian and police are everywhere It appears there was a serious accident as a result of this bollard being where it was
If this is true someone needs hanging out to dry

A couple of those plastic boxes with arrows on, surrounded by high concrete curbs They may as well have dumped that other concrete Darwin thing there

I don't get the problem to be honest, I've been down Smithfield road in the car recently, the new road layout was well signed - if you are turning right to the car parks etc. it's the right hand lane, if not it's the left. Why is it dangerous?

There was never a problem there before, at one point they had yellow diamonds there They worked fine Suddenly erecting something with high curbs in the middle lane is pointless and dangerous I don't know the details of the accident exactly but being there and not long after debating how dangerous it was, to see someone lying there possibly dead made it more annoying

In Telford there are numerous examples of these concrete death traps . The police say it stops overtaking and says it stops people going fast . The reality is that people still overtake and even though over the speed limits which are set ludicrously low . The problem lies with women drivers and oaps in general and even though they are driving at 20 mph on fast roads they still manage to mount the concrete obelisks and destroy the plastic cones . In the vast majority of cases , Speed is not the cause of accidents BUT lack of skill is ! That is what the government should be targeting ! If they had , for example , OAPS retaking their driving tests that would result in the majority not passing and thus fewer bad drivers . The government would never do this as less people would drive the cars , less fuel being bought ,less insurance sold , etc resulting in less jobs and less revenue for the government . And we all know their answer to that !!

Agree a stupid idea and causes a lot more problems than it solves, as the vast majority of traffic travelling down Smithfield Rd doesnt turn into Ravens Meadow anyway, so what happens is everyone has to merge into one lane. I've had people cut in front of me and I've had to cut up other people when they wont let you in. Have also seen people who obviously dont know the road almost drive into it.

It's well signed and on a clear stretch of road, if you manage to run into it you've really got to question your driving ability!

Shroppy star site is reporting it as an accident between a car and a pedestrian and the road was closed for three hours.
Hope those involved are ok

Ask insurance companies where their losses pile up and it won't be us older drivers. Why are premiums so high for young drivers, it's because of the risk that they pose. So many people of all groups are not as good drivers as they think they are, you sound a prime example saying speed does not cause accidents but lack of skill does. Lack of skill is dangerous so is excessive speed by idiots regardless of how much skill they think they have and have a total disregard for others on the road.

if its there to slow boy racers down then obviously it doesnt work
all it did was cause a boy racer to hit it and lose control of the car and put someone in hospital

Strange thing about it is why do people need to cross Smithfield Rd there anyway? The only thing which is on the river side of the road anywhere near there is the new sculpture and nearer to it there is a proper pedestrian crossing at the lights anyhow. If people were going to Frankwell they'd either use the aforementioned crossing or the footbridge.

It is true that the higher insurance hits the under 21's and the over 70's because of the vastly higher ratio of accidents . The younger drivers do have youth on their side regarding eyesight , reaction times and fitness all of which aid a driver and which with age diminshes rapidly in older drivers . Younger drivers are less experienced but more observant drivers and therefore avoid more crashes than old people . And the facts do state that Speed accounts for minimal amounts of crashes but lack of skill accounts for the majority . Check the annual police records and Rospa . These concrete ' forts ' represent a hazard on the road and create more accidents than prevents .

Apparently having a drink and then driving without your lights on(according to witnesses) does not help you see these bollards.

It does help if you are sober with lights on, of course it does But the next one to hit it might be a 75 year old with poor eyesight Fact is I think it's dangerous and the road would be safer without it

It's not dangerous for people fit to drive, so why should it be removed?

So a drink driver hits the bollard put in place to make the road safer and prevent idiotic boy racers from using Smithfield Road as a race track and all of a sudden it's dangerous? I don't recall anyone else hitting it! Driving takes common sense supposedly. No issue at all! The drink drive ban has been inforced for years! If you drink drive then you are dicing with death, bollard or no bollard! Let's not excuse any muppet who decides to drink drive.
I remember when the Meole Island had no traffic lights, it was hell! It's now far safer for all concerned. Mistakes are made, but the Smithfield Road bollard is not one of them. I'm willing to bet the poor fella who was hit by the car was not blaming the bollard but the idiot driving while over the limit.

From the Shroppy Star:
Blog: Smithfield Road changes? Leave it alone Thursday 16th September 2010,
Blog: Can you not just leave things well alone?
First of all, the speed limit on the inner ring road has been reduced from 60mph to 50mph.
Can anyone tell me what that 10mph drop achieves (other than allowing the morons who don’t know what the National Speed Limit Applies sign means to legitimately drive at the speed they were already driving at before)?
I can understand the 40mph on Telford Way, where the pedestrian crossing has been installed, but the rest of it? Why?
But worse than that is the new road layout on Smithfield Road.
Now, as you come through the lights by the Mardol Quay, you suddenly find yourself forced through a bottleneck into the lefthand lane, even if you don’t want to go left, because of the new ‘pedestrian refuge’.
Who’s stupid idea was that? The potential for accidents and traffic jams for the lights on Bridge Street is now huge.
All that’s going to happen is cars stuck in the bottleneck will block the junction and no-one will be able to move anywhere.
And who asked for this ‘refuge’ for the hard done-by pedestrians? Apparently, it’s part of the Sustrans Connect2 scheme to link the walking and cycling route along Smithfield Road with Roushill, Raven Meadows and Meadow Place.
Shropshire Council says it hopes the island will help pedestrians and cyclists cross between the town centre and the riverside.
Well, news flash geniuses: Smithfield Road has a pedestrian crossing at each end and a footbridge in the middle. Exactly how many ways do people need to cross a road?
Why not go the whole hog and build a subway? Or provide all pedestrians with jet-packs so they can fly across the road? Cyclists could all get baskets with their own ET in so they can do likewise.
Admittedly, this plan is a little more ambitious, as it would require the authorities to discover alien life and the alien life would need the gift of levitation and they’d have to be able to live in an oxygen-rich atmosphere.
Forget it. I haven’t fully thought it through and it’s clearly a ridiculous idea. Perhaps I should see if Sustrans needs a development officer…
Rant by David Burrows
So seemingly nothing to do with 'stopping boy racers' and as Mr Burrows said, as I did earlier in the thread, its encouraging people to race down the right lane and cutting into the left just before the bollard then swinging back into the right lane, have been guilty of this myself when in a hurry.

Whenever there is a power failure at Meole Brace the traffic island works superbly with self regulation/ Of course making the roads safer is "absolute nonsense" Please try and attempt to cross the Meole Island on a busy Saturday as a pedestrian or in a vehicle at any point and tell me the lights don't help. They were put in to ease peak flow, and yes there are times when they fail and its possible to navigate it safely, but the bottom line is the lights help reduce accidents in times of heavy traffic. Anyway up the Town!

ditto to jamos posts
the other day 3 boy racers raced past my house and must have been doing close to 50 20 is pretty fast where i live
i had a hammer in my hand and was quite tempted to throw it into the path of the 3rd one a driver within the speed limit would easily have stopped
like i said, my personal opinion there are idiots out there, we all know that why place something somewhere that they are likely to hit the road would be a safer place without it
i'm against speed cameras but one of them would be a better option there
