council have a bit of cash left over that they will loose if they dont spend, so it was either turn heathgates island into a shrubbery and paint the roads green, or put some street lights on otley road.

From the councils website - its part of a larger imrprovment scheme for the Northern Corridoor
Work to enhance and improve the Heathgates roundabout in Shrewsbury will begin today (Friday 28 January) – the first of a number of potential projects that aim to improve the town’s ‘northern corridor’, one of the main routes into the town centre.
The Heathgates work will see new landscaping on and around the island, improvements for pedestrians and cyclists and a reduction in the number and size of signs.
Many of the shrubs and floral tiered planters currently found on the island will be retrieved with a view to reusing them at other locations throughout the town or county.
This will be the first work carried out as part of Shropshire Council’s Northern Corridor Environmental Improvement Plan, a package of proposed projects to enhance the A5112 - A5191 route from Battlefield Island to Castle Foregate.
The work is funded by the Department of Communities and Local Government through the Shrewsbury Growth Point programme.
It is anticipated that the enhancement works will be completed by early April 2011 and every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum while the work is carried out.
During the work it will be necessary to close Sundorne Road at its junction with Heathgates roundabout on three consecutive Sundays - 6, 13 and 20 February.
Signed diversions will be in place during the closures.
Following the Heathgates work, it is hoped that additional projects can be implemented at Spring Gardens and around the railway station area.
Councillor Malcolm Price, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for planning and housing, said: “Our aim is to create a vibrant and distinct northern corridor that can act as a prime gateway into Shrewsbury. The Heathgates island work, and future projects, will help to greatly improve this important entrance into the town centre. We also hope that they will help to attract further private sector investment into northern Shrewsbury, producing new housing and employment opportunities into this challenging area.”
Alan Mosley, Shropshire Councillor for Castlefields and Ditherington, said: “This, together with the improvements to the road layout, brings significant improvements for local residents and travellers. I am now looking forward to local consultations about a Growth Point scheme to rejuvenate the area around the Ditherington/Spring Gardens shops.”
The Northern Corridor is a priority area as outlined in the Shrewsbury Growth Point Programme of Development.
This Growth Point-funded work follows on from recent work at Heathgates that was funded by Cycle Shrewsbury and Shropshire Council.

I have to say as a regular runner around town, Heathgates is just about the worst jucntion to cross and agree that for non car users the improvements will be a benifit...

Then again, I know someone who moved here from Bath and didn't use the "northern corridor" until after she'd moved, but said she'd seriously have thought twice about it if she'd seen it earlier!
She does like Shrewsbury now though.

I ran through it last night and found it a bit easier to cross, but guess that could be as people were figureing out what had changed and looking thus going slower... your right though no real change other than people being more cautious initally!

Good luck on them 'improving' the next section of the northern corridor into town. Slight problem is you have cars from 4 different roads going to the Heathgates, a fair proportion of which want to go towards the town centre on 1 road, hence why traffic is often so crap along ditherington. No amount of green paint, flowery displays, removal of signs or cycle lane changes is going to help. What would have helped is a relief road on that side of town meaning traffic can avoid the town centre altogether... Besides there is a much nicer well known way for cyclists and pedestrians to reach the town centre from the Sundorne area - the path along the old canal behind the sports village, goes underneath telford way, sydney avenue and then along the river which gives a choice of places to enter the town centre, completely car free.

Anyone know how much this cosmetic exercise is costing?

Dont worry Jonah some people on here seem to jump on peoples mistakes the first chance they get to make themselves look smug little gits. These people seem to forget they are not perfect and make mistakes of their own. Just some of us are not small minded to make comments on their cock ups.

Not that at all Martin, some of us are however fed up with people blaming "the authorities" or "the council" or "the government" or on this occasion "the quangos" when they are barking up the wrong tree and blaming the wrong people. A case in point is the Local Council meeting I attended 2 weeks ago for Sutton and Meole where the audience saw fit to rant and rave at Shropshire Councillors about things they were not responsible for - from memory they should instead have been ranting at amongst others Central Government, The Prison Service, and even Sainsburys Anyway Jonah. just for the record I worked for a Quango which has been disbanded, hope that's cheered you up

Out of intrest who was it reg? He worked for The Audit Commission who independently audit and reports to the Public on Local Authorities and Health Bodies performance. As this will without exception plummet over the next 5 years due to cutbacks the Government won't want that being brought to peoples attention would they

So Ghost if its none of these then who makes the decision to waste thousands under the pretext of “Our aim is to create a vibrant and distinct northern corridor that can act as a prime gateway into Shrewsbury.etc etc etc?
Can anyone tell me the expected cost?

Can anyone tell me the expected cost? I presume you are a council tax payer, in which case I'd suggest you write to Shropshire Council (Overseers of the scheme) and ask them to confirm the expected cost of the scheme, they are dutybound to disclose this to you under the freedom of information act. Could I suggest you also ask who is funding the scheme, as I would envisage other parties will be involved (the Highways Agency for one) and I'd doubt the Shropshire Council would be picking up the whole tab. Nice to see someone making an effort (at last)

If you'd not just read the back page of last weeks Shropshire Stars you'd have seen the Council explain in there that the Landowner of the Retail Park are responsible (NOT THE COUNCIL. AND NOT SAINSBURYS). The "making an effort" doesn't apply to you mon
