Good luck to him. He'll need it with their budget!

Saw him in the Square earlier with his family. Proberly having a last look round before getting stuck in at Stockport. So obviously not completely avoiding the town since he left.

A decent enough bloke with strong family values but in my opinion not a football manager. He would be better off as a pundit, could see him on Gillette Soccer Special with Jeff.

Too much Simmo bashing for my liking.
Was let go by STFC in similar circumstances to when Moyes had a disappointing season at Everton 5-6 years ago - however Everton stuck with Moyes, they let him build a new team ,the club had stability and the rest is history.
Was given a budget, didn't unfortunately have the luck in the final and then had the budget severely cut resulting in half the team 'unavailable' to re-sign during the season. Also the departure of his assistant John McMahon was a massive one.
Players who were happy at the club but they were not offered extend contracts which by human nature causes unrest in the dressing room. All he needed was to build another team but was not given the chance. The buck normally stops with the manager, but like all managers, performance is affected by how a manager is managed by those above. In my opinion he managed STFC with one arm behind his back.
Stats prove his win ratio was as good as Graham Turner.
Performances were poor at times but some fans need to get real and understand and appreciate the goings on.

A strange time under Simpson really He took over a poor side and we saw no improvement you normally get when a new manager comes in, no honeymoon period and generally we limped along to safety The next season he was given loads of money and tried to bring in a lot of experienced players to win promotion, some signings worked, some didnt. The start of the season we looked a brilliant free-flowing team with two memorable 7 nil victories. However our away record was terrible. Despite having a massive budget and being in a poor league with teams with points deductions we scr@ped into the play-offs and such is football had we won in the final then Im sure Simmo would be a hero, instead he is labelled a failure Last season he lost some key players (eg Grant Holt & Ben Davies) and his replacements were inadequate. Every fan could tell you that the problem in our team was a lack of pace, width and creativity but Simpson never seemed to sort this - instead he just kept gambling on strikers. Ive got no real axe to grind with Simpson, he seems a decent, genuine man but two things were his downfall in my opinion. One was embarrasing defeats to Blyth, Staines, Darlington & Grimsby which indicated that either he couldnt motivate his team or they couldnt face a battle. The other was his relationship with the fans and how he seemed to have a running battle with us in the media each week. For such a media savvy man as him I really couldnt believe it when he called his own fans diabolical My biggest disapointment with him though was the style of football. I dont expect Barcelona type football but I expected attacking football focusing on width. Instead we got dull, direct football and a midfield full of defensive players Good luck to him, although will be interesting to see if he goes in and says he has learnt lessons from Shrewsbury, just like he did with us rreferring to Preston (and he then went and made those same mistakes) Best post on the thread in my opinion. I think another factor worth consideration is that from July '08 - December '09 we believed ourselves to be a club on an inexorably upward trajectory. Our chairman released a statement saying that he regretted that some of our fans mistook his past prudence for a lack of ambition but that we were now financially secure and there was a 'business case' for getting promoted and climbing the divisions asap. Experienced players with undoubted pedigree like Holt, Murray, Sherrif, Coughlan and Walker came in as we fixed our sights on promotion. As we entered the January transfer window fans talked of signing players like Karl Hawley to give us that one last push at promtion. Instead, as the economic climate took a turn for the worse, we backtracked on the original strategy and brought in the likes of Ashikodi, Chadwick and Riza on loan and Terry Dunfield to strengthen midfield. The trend continued the following season with Ben Davies leaving for nowt and Holt flogged for a decent fee but never replaced with anyone near his quality. The fact the strikers brought in to fill the Holt shaped hole in our team struggled to make any meaningful impact deepened the fans disillusionment and Simpson probably took a lot of grief for the consequences of what has become known as the 'contracts debacle'. Other than that, Ant is right, Simpson didn't save us from relegation, he had no immediate impact and struggled for results. We stayed up largely by virtue of Wrexham and Mansfield being so wretched (in fact , we lost 3-1 at Mansfield in the penultimate game of the season). And I find it hard to credit him for 'bringing in Holt'. The money brought in Holt. Nice bloke, and hope he's successful somewhere else, as long as it's not at our expense!

Hate to say it but I was right about Mr Simpson from the start Mr Wild. no you werent, a p**s poor manager would have got us relegated, not to the play off final and an upper midtable finish. he may not have got us promoted but how do you explain 2 successive promotions at carlisle? hardly a p**s poor manager, just one that didnt work out as well as we wanted.

Hate to say it but I was right about Mr Simpson from the start Mr Wild. Just being hypothetical for a moment: if he takes County up this season, would you hold the same opinion? It didn't work out for him here I can't disagree with that and he made some mistakes, but is 2 years enough time for a manager to work the oracle at a club that has had little in the way of success in recent times? I do so hope that 'The Messiah' delivers for you and everyone else salivating at the prospect of GT returning the good times to SY2 or there will be another one who's a dud and should never have come back. T.I.M.E. No football manager seems to get enough of it these days. Simmo about 15th longest serving when he got the P45? Tells it's own story really. I wish him well anyways.

Did he do well at Rochdale or his first season in charge at Carlisle or at Preston. He definitely failed at the Town. He was the manager given the clubs crown jewels in his first full season and he wasted them. Lets be realistic in terms of on the pitch results we finished 9th and 12th just an upper midtable finish. More importantly he alienated many fans.

I certainly do not subscribe to the theory that money buys success. It helps but it is pointless calling splashing cash on something you can not control as failure. Simpson may have been given the clubs biggest budget ever but it was no where near as much as other clubs. Therefore even the premis of being the richest club is simply not true.
Just like the demise of Fred Davies when he had to sell players to balance books, what mattered was that Paul Simpson could not build on his 'success' as he could not sign up the stars of the team for a longer period. Many players wanted to stay and felt disillusioned. Human Nature (sod professionalism) shows that if you are not wanted then you seek pastures new and you try less sub-consciously.
For boring football and what others subscribe to pivotal ingredients of success, then not letting in goals and a defensive midfield is what the likes of the successful managers of this modern era start with.

Try his team didnt turn up. What's your excuse for him having a terrible season with such a massive budget?

Nobody is rewriting history if you read what I said was in terms of results on the pitch we finished 9th, FACT. I see you fail to answer the other substantive points. was on my way out, i have a social life. substantive points? rather full of oneself ? not substantive points at all. the only fact (and believe me, putting it in capitals doesnt make it one) is that we made the play-off final. there is no official league that says otherwise, regardless of your usual negative spin. some fans alienated themselves, and if you want to be honest the tide had turned and those "offended" were already against hime well before the comments you are no doubt referring to. some fans didnt even have to turn, you were pretty much against him from the start . i was actually answering sss's point about him being p**s poor, so his early faliure at rochdale and the problems at preston(which again werent all his doing from what i have read). my point was that anyone who can get back to back promotions cant be p**s poor. i didnt call him a world beater, just said he wasnt as poor as is being said. so really your other points were a total irrelevance anyway, i didnt say there werent problems. I dont think you are at all interested in being fair, you think you are but you arent. You are a bit like my dad in that respect(not an age jibe btw, you just remind me of his mindset), you dont want to set yourself up for disappointment, so you subconsciously take the view that we will do badly so that you can feel like you expected it and not be so disappointed. Like my dad you will deny it, but thats the subconscious for you.
