Looking at the height of our new recruits encourages me greatly. For years i always thought Shrewsbury seemed to get outmuscled and signed short fullbacks etc. I am pleased to see Turner's new recruits will give us a more physical presence which i feel is key to success in this division. Even Harrold will give us a strong presence up front, combined with the more intense weight training regime under Tony Ford.
So far well done GT.

Gotta disagree
I felt there was never a problem with height in previous squads, Simpson's included Langmead, Coughlan, Jackson, SCS, Hibbert, Holt, Chadwick etc. Our problem was always the lack of pace, we needed someone else with pace alongside our big striker, someone with pace on the wings yet that never came in.

I kinda got to disagree with you to an extent too. I felt with Murray and Dunfield in the centre of the park we struggled physically. Dunfield at 5'6'' and Murray although at 5'10'' was never the biggest of builds.
Hopefully the trend can continue with more physical recruits filling that void.
I agree lack of pace was a massive problem.
I was thinking further back really, like Herd (as much as i liked him), Ashton, Seabury, Hanmer, Preece, Dunfield, Murray, Lewis Neal.
I feel we miss the qualities Drummond brought to the team. Again a good presence, good heading and good distribution.
Just pleased all the new recruits are of a good height.

A lack of height did not stop Spain from winning the World Cup and whilst it can be advatageous at CB and CF it will not provide success without good footballing ability.
Pace, ability on the ball, movement off the ball, good passing, vision, reading the game with a quick speed of thought complimented by good decision making on the pitch are all vital aspects to a succesful team.

I never said it was the only quality required; but at League 2 level imo it's important.

I am pleased to see Turner's new recruits will give us a more physical presence I'm not sure that is the case? The four players who have come in so far are very similar in terms of height and build to those players they have replaced. Sharps for Coughlan, Raven for Langmead, Sadler for Scarz and Harrold for Hibbert.

Agree with you but Spain don't play in League 2! All the traits you list are important but you also need to be able to mix it with the more physical sides on a wet Tuesday in November. I'd hope GT is recruiting based on your criteria while keeping an eye on the overall mix in the squad

I personally feel height and physical stature is imperative at League 2 level. The positions for me this covers are across the back 4, the midfield central pairing and an attacker to lead the front line properly. I personally have no interest in talking about Spain et al, as it's pointless as we are in a completely different field. I am merely praising GT for bringing in this ilk of player for these key positions. Also my friend i am not one of those guys who feels the team needs to be completely filled with big guys as that would be plain stupid. However in order to effectively compete and drag ourselves out of league 2 then i feel this method needs to be adhered to. Oh i recall the Arsenal team labelled the 'invincibles' who went an entire season without losing a game being all rather tall, and a lot being over 6 foot. I can't seem to recall them playing hoofball.

And both fullbacks were under 5'9"and they failed in the following seasons to a Man Utd team of average height or less .My friend I am pointing out physical attributes can't compete with skill as the football history books prove.Brain will triumph over brawn. The rest of the world encourages skill we still look for "big lads"who can take the leather off the ball.Whatever level you are at you should look for ability firs if you can keep the ball they can't play

So two lads turn up for a trial one is 5'7"and just over 10st the other 6'1" and 13 st based on size we take the big fella.......... one is lionel messi the other Emile Heskey need I say,. more in the words of the great BRUCE LEE ,size is no guarantee of strength.I remember Peters' team of "warriors"need I say more.Give me lads who can play big or small but at our end of the league not many of the bigg'uns can play.

My friend it is still possible to have big lads with a brain, and big lads can keep the ball. Ok if brawn is not requitred in our league tell me why GT has brought in ex-weightlifter Tony Ford and upgraded all the gym equipment? - is that to improve skill is it? The perfect blend of skill and physical strength is needed at every football club, but to compete in LEAGUE 2 imo you need a physically strong side.

It's just about getting the right balance throughout the team. Our main issues last season were a lack of any physical prescence in midfield and a complete lack of pace throughout. The new 'weights' coach will certainly strenghthen the current crop and Turners recent pursuit of Diarougaria indicates that he knows what the problems were/ are. If we can add Ainsworth or someone similar with a bit of pace we won't be far off.

Messi and villa both 5'7" the title of this thread is "height is the way forward"Tony Ford can improve strength but you are on about height and as I have stated if you look at decent "footballing"sides at all levels height plays no part only as you mentioned in set pieces but timing can overcome this as has been proved by many smaller players.Lets not just play someone because he is bigger than the other fella or smaller for that matter lets pick the best players regardless of siz

If height and set pieces are so important why don't Stoke win the premier league every year.If you have height in your teams you tend to play to it i.e.kick and rush.Ideally smaller men wide including fullbacks bigger fellas down the spine.

If stature is imperative in L2in your eyes how are our young players who are all about 5'9"except jon taylor who is 5'6"going to get a game cos you wouldn't pick them using your criteria are they wasting their time.Watched them in the reserves if you're good enough you're big enough give me Bradshaw before Elder and Danny Taylor before Holden anytime.

I'd even go as far as to say height is the way up

how tall are messi and villa ? do either of them score many headers? i dont watch enough spanish football to know. i bet both of them wish they were taller would peter crouch get in the england squad under 3 different managers if he wasnt so tall? smaller players with lower centres of gravity are equally important , thats why we have big man / little man attack duos a lot.

Always thought that players like Ashton and Herd were too small to be completely effective in this division. Prefer to see a team set up with a "big" defense who can also play football, and not "hoofball". Would also like to see height in the centre of midfield.Too often last year we lost possession, or failed to win possession in mid field because we failed to win the ball in the air. Only time will tell, but i,m more optomistic than pessimistic about the coming season.

Someone please tell me why are we having a discussion about size.If someone has real quality this will shine through earlier this year Bournemouth came to the prostar with a makeshift team one of the centre backs being a central midfielder of about 5'7".He didn't struggle because he could play.A players size is irrelevant unless he is a goalkeeper, real players use their physique to their advantage whatever size they are.It is getting the blend right that is important not just picking players because of their size.Granted in this division you do need big centrebacks because the football is more direct but if you win the battle to impose your style on the opposition you are halfway there.I for one would hate to think that our young players will miss out purely because of size but I do agree in this division you need big players down the spine.Plus the fact I call small anyone under 5'8"in todys tems.

I have to say skill is more important than height. We could have some one a tall as Crouch, but if you have no one to with the skill to get the ball to him, what's the point ?
Who was the 6'8" striker that used to play for Stockport and couldn't head a ball ? Dean Spink marked him out of the game the 1st time he played centre back.
