It's in the local Watford rag...
Out-of-favour Watford defender Mat Sadler has joined League Two side Shrewsbury Town on loan. Sadler was in training with the rest of the Watford players yesterday but will now link up with Graham Turner’s squad until January 4th. The 25-year-old was a £750,000 signing from Birmingham City in January 2008 but has not played for the first team since the 4-2 defeat against Bristol City on Boxing Day 2008. Sadler only made the bench seven times last season despite numerous injuries, right-back Lloyd Doyley playing in his position and summer signing Jure Travner seemingly out of favour. The left back spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Stockport County and started every time he was fit, making 20 appearances. Sadler’s absence has led to fans questioning whether the player was left out because Watford will need to pay Birmingham City more money should he appear. However, when asked last month if that was true, Hornets manager Malky Mackay stated: “no, absolutely not.” Shrewbury finished 12th in League Two last season.

No doubt some people will moan about it not being a forward or a keeper.

Quality signing, forget your Skarzs' and Buchanans', Sadler is twice the player of them!

Sounds like a goodun, significant experience at a higher level not some fading old duffer. I wonder how much of his wages we're paying, must be on a fair wedge if he was signed for £750k?

Underwhelming loan signing!! Maybe a left back's never going to overwhelm you. Mid-20s, top level experience, £750k fee not so long ago and a point to prove - you tell me how we might sign a higher rated left back than that.

A Start, Cant say I have seen the player actually play,so would be unfair to comment on his abilities.
Just hope this is not the start of a continuous flow of loan signings alla Hereford.
As already pointed out, I would have been alot more excited if we sign players on a permanent contract.

A good signing judging on his career record to date and it solves the problem of not having an proper left back.
There are always pro and cons with loan signings where it either does or does not work out with some players. E.g. Skarz (good) Cureton( c$%p)
What does benefit is that they should be of a higher quality, not tied down for the long run and therefore it does not cost the club anything at the end of the next season when they return to their parent club – compared to releasing a player still under contract.
Alternatively, though filling a team with loan players is short term, we could sign any successful loans next year especially if they are released by their parent club and become free transfers.

Turner obviously has good links with Watford - a few of his Hereford loanees came from there (Ainsworth and Robinson ?)

I asked my Watford season ticket holder friend what sort of wages Sadler is on and this was the reply:
..... too much !!
Rumour has it Birmingham City had an “appearances” clause that means a hefty lump sum payment next time he plays in the WFC 1st team, and that hampered his chances of resurrecting his career at WFC. WFC have denied it and I’m inclined to believe the alternative explanations :
(1) He’s totally s**t, (I have seen clear evidence of this with my own eyes :^)
(2) He needs regular football elsewhere to get his confidence back and make the him great Player he was once, again.
My money’s on “(1)” , but let’s hope it’s “(2)” and he does well for STFC !!

I sympathise with the sentiment, but, following freedom of contract few players stay with clubs for long. It seems to me that there's little difference between loan and contracted players.

I see no harm with this signing at all. Lets face it Holden is an average permanent signing who probably commands a decent wedge - with that said i would rather a 6 month loan with limited risk. Money doesn't need to be chucked at full-backs at this level, i think Turner has made the right choice on this one.

Anything on any of the Watford boards about him / the move? Always find the othere fans' views enlightening - as they were with Lewis Neal. Maybe Simmo will snap up a few of the duds he brought here if he gets the Strockport gig .... come on Paul be a gentleman!!

I think its a sensible bit of business.
We get to see what he's like for 6 months, he gets to see what we're like for 6 months.
I'd rather us take someone on trial for 6 months than hand them a 3 year contract and find out they aren't right for us. Nathan Elder, Glynn Garner anyone?
One of the plus points of the loan market is, we won't have many if any players on long 3 year contracts. They will (in theory) have to keep playing well to keep getting contracts.
I think using the loan market gives us a bit more flexibility too.
If its used properly, but I think we still need a certain number of permenant signgings for stability.

Apparently Watford wont play him at the moment because an extra appearance will trigger a clause that means they have to pay Blues a further £100k. From what he told me Mat is pretty peed off with this and has thought of buying himself out of his contract to get a new club but i guess this deal at least gives him some first team action.
