Penalty tries. The difference in rugby is that referees are treated with respect. I think with decision making like this at the top of the game there is little hope for it being played in the right spirit: news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2010/8785140.stmFIFA considered a longer ban for unsportsmanlike behaviour but considered that he had little option. Dear me, what a shower. It's a bit different. Tries are alot different to goals. For example, a goalkeeper could save a shot... whereas there's nobody to save a try. The ball had beaten the keeper.

The ball had beaten the keeper. In that situation, yes. But if it had been just a little bit higher how could the ref tell it would not have hit the bar? It is not the clear ones that would be the issue, it is all the ambiguity around the edges which would be impossible. How would you define "beaten the keeper"? What about a shot from ourside the box, handled by a player in front of the keeper that looked like it was going in?

In rugby they have the whole width of the pitch as the try line, no cross bar and no posts (apart from the obviously).
The situation seemed clear cut on Friday and it seemed as though a clear goal had been prevented. What if though he had been stood near the left hand post and his left hand had prevented a goal and his hand happened to touch the post?
Would the ball have gone in? Would it have hit the post? Would it have gone wide even?
It's easy when it's a clear cut as Friday, but when it's not we'll still be arguing the t0ss. We could argue that France had been banned from the WC and Ireland sent instead.
It's e, but cheating happens all over the pitch to gain some sort of un-fair advantage.
Incidentally I did the same in an RAF game and no one called me a cheat, I just got some sympathy from both sets of players and "I'd have done the same" type remarks, even the ref was almost apologetic. Mind you there's not much at stake in the Services London League.

"but it is cheating too"
Couldn't disagree more.
Would expect a Town defender to do exactly the same.

"but it is cheating too" Couldn't disagree more. Would expect a Town defender to do exactly the same. A widely held view which debases the game. Whether a ball has beaten the keeper is a matter of judgement, just as whether a clear goal-scoring opportunity has been prevented by a foul on a striker. Just because a judgement is required doesn't make it invalid.

i dont know why everyone is being so daft about this, it happens once in a blue moon.
the free kick that lead to the handball was a dive from a ghana player anyway, so justice was done.
