Anyone else noticed that the wooden fence alongside Oteley Road has been replaced with the ubiquitous 6ft green metal railings.
Good consultation by the club ? nice to be consulted.
Wonder who has paid for this and why wasn't consideration given to re-establish the concrete staircase that was once alongside the railway bridge and can still be seen there ?

I dont understand the need for the club to consult on every little thing, how does it change your match day experience? maybe if it were around the pitch consultation would be good but i would assume its to secure the site better or something

why couldn't there have been consultation about provididng a proper access to the ground from that point. An access that is used by hundreds and hundreds every game ?
The club did not mention any of this because it serves their purpose not to do so.
One of my big bug bears about the whole new stadium thing is the clubs willingness to hide behind the `safety committee`, this anonomous group of people that seemingly decide how we experience our match day routine and yet who appear entirely unaccountable.
Three times in the past i have e-mailed the club, twice to Bickerton, once to John Harris asking for details of this committee and how they can be contacted and everytime my e-mail has been ignored. In my opinion every fan group should be lobbying this faceless bunch of people so as to make the whole matchday experience more supporter friendly and enjoyable.
Just one example of how the club treat the fanbase with distain and disrespect. It was a different story when they wanted us to campaign and get active in support of them for the move from Gay Meadow

It would be nice if the club could finish off the pathway leading to the underpass with the same cinder finish that leads from Oteley Road to the gate at the rear of the west stand -could never understand why only half the job was done.

Q - Hi
Are there any plans to install steps near the railway bridge on Oteley Road to link up with the footpath that fans use to gain admission to the ground via the gate by the West Stand? I realise that this land is probably owned by the council and therefore not the responsibility of the club, but perhaps working together with the council, something could be arranged.
This would save hundreds of fans having to walk all the way into and then around the stadium complex (mainly West Stand and South Stand users), and also those who decide to climb over the wooden fence and down the banking as a way of a short-cut. This would also help with the exit of fans from the stadium at the end of each game. Also the footpath in question (again probably council owned) would benefit from being re-laid or improved all the way along from the North Stand through to the tunnel behind Sainsbury's to improve this facility as it gets quite muddy, etc when there has been adverse weather.
Many Thanks & Regards,
Peter Adams - via Email
A - Pete,
Thanks for your email regarding the pathway and 'Oteley Road' fence.
I have had several meetings with the Local Authority, regarding the fence, as it was highlighted as a problem area, with people scrambling up the bank and climbing over the 'weak' wooden fence. You are right, it is council land, therefore, the local authority have decided to erect a more robust fence, at the top of the bank, to prevent the use. It is not viable, to fit steps, due to enormous cost, the need for disabled access and egress and the footpath size at the side of the Oteley Road. It will mean a short walk around the new fence, however, public safety, has to be more important than public inconvenience.
The football club has paid for the footpath to be re laid, shortly after the Port Vale game in October, covering the area, deemed most necessary. It may be that the walkway at the tunnel end will be looked at in the close season. What we did cost a few thousand pounds!!

Footpath size is a complete and utter red herring. It is exactly the same sized footpath that everyone uses that exits the ground via the main gates. Bunkum.
Access and egress for disabled supporters is there along the path via the double gates that are never used.
Enormous cost of steps. Stop it ! it's some shuttering and some concrete with a metal handrail either side. The footings and base for such a structure is already there.
This is a classic example of where some dialogue, consultation and co opertaion between club and supporters could have resulted in a positive move for all.

It was a different story when they wanted us to campaign and get active in support of them for the move from Gay Meadow to be fair, you haent sounded to happy with the club for a while but sometimes i tink they cant win. people ask questions, if theydont get the answer they want they claime they have been fobbed off, if they dont answer they are being ignorant(although i could see myself getting quite frustrated if the same happened to me, a simple aknowledgment autoreply wouldnt be much effort). i think the club are talking to fan groups all the time, the trust are still working toward decorating the concourses and they also sit on various comittees as fan reps so there is some representation. you are most definately not a stupid man, i would imagine you would be welcome to help out with one of the supporters groups, and you would have an opportunity to ask some of the questions you want answered. was it the fence that people used to climb over on a match day that was replaced? if so it's a bit of a no brainer that it will be a health and safety issue.

I do like the below quote as if we would should be grateful:
"The football club has paid for the footpath to be re laid, shortly after the Port Vale game in October, covering the area, deemed most necessary"
That was not for our benefit, people had been moaning about the dodgy surface along the path for a long time. It was simply done because of a rock throwing contest after the Vale game

A proper, safe and accessible access from that point is the issue. Let's have it straight. I am not suggesting a new railway bridge or underground metro link from the town centre. Just some steps. I will maintain that the club keep their heads down and hide behind officialdom when it suits rather than address the issues that affect their bedrock support.

Would you have liked Roland to pop round yours and get the go ahead over a cup of tea? No, Because he probably wouldn't like what I told him. But perhaps something on the official site or Shrewschat would not be unreasonable.

Considering we have not got a game for two months there seems plenty of time to make the big announcement, perhaps your being a little harsh? If you were complaining about the lack of information regarding the managerial position, the contracts, coaches leaving and the retained list then I feel you would have a point, but a little tiny fence?

A good chain saw should soon sort it out. I have a friend. . . . . .
Then perhaps we could have the sensible option which would suit disabled and all, a z shaped gentle sloped path down the embankment with handrail, rather than making people walk all the way round to come all the way back on themselves adding an extra five minutes to the journey time into the ground.
My information is that it is all about a lack of taking responsibilty between club and council. Yet another design flaw in the many design flaws of our stadium.
Yes, H&S has a lot to answer for on this, but so do the architects and the penny pinchers (both club and council)

i've not noticed jamo but i presume you mean where a healthy set of steps should reside, the ones fans swarm through the gates that are locked to access (only they cant because they are locked)
i've not bought at season ticket this season because of petty little things like this
call me lazy but i prefer to walk 10 yards instead of 500 where possible

There is a proper safe access point for us all!! It's just some of you are to lazy to use it! The size of path at the top of the embankment where the steps are wanted I'd far to narrow to be safe! Without making otley rail bridge single lane and narrowing the road we have no chance! Now let's all do some exercise and walk the extra fee minutes!

Perhaps if the club officials gave up there parking spaces and walked we'd get better solutions to things like this, but as long as they can just drive past the rabble and take their privalaged places then who cares about us mere fans

And there was me thinking that I was going to a football match in the most convenient manner, not to do some exercise Am I right in thinking that the 'correct' access point to the 'Super Blues' walkway from Oteley Road is near enough by the main exit and is through a large gate that is pretty much closed anyway? If so it makes the walkway pretty much redundant for anyone heading onto Oteley Road. What is the point of walking near enough to the main entrance to then come back on yourself when you may as well just continue, walk through the main gates and then at the back of the North Stand, past the Power League And from a health & safety perspective or risk assessement (or any other things that are used as an excuse for these things), then doesnt it increase the chances of more fans bumping into away fans?

Yes you can argue that its fans being lazy, however a walkway was created, supposedly for the benefit of fans as a short cut
However in typical STFC style, it was done half-ar$ed which meant you had the embarrasing sight of hundreds of grown men running up and down an embankment to access the path. And now rather than try and improve access to the walkway, the actual short cut has been removed so the whole thing has been completely pointless
For the record I agree that something had to happen to that fence because it did look a disaster waiting to happen.

I'm a bit disappointed in this decision. I think it could have been turned into a positive but instead it will now undoubtedly p**s a fair few people off.
The fence definitely did need replacing, it was an accident waiting to happen. That said, from a Health and Safety angle it should of been dealt with much earlier when it became apparent that fans were using it as a short cut. This doesn't mean just sticking up a more robust one, when the decision was made some sort of consultation should of gone to get some ideas on how to make it a positive move.
I really am annoyed by the disability comment. It comes over as 'if we have to put in some steps we have to put in a ramp for the disabled'. Who was on the committee David Brent ? What a terrible way to approach it. Why not make it accessible for abled and disabled persons alike ?
It really isn't rocket science. They could have gone to Meole Brace Junior school and asked the kids to design an accessible route for all and they would've come up with ideas better than just sticking up a fence.
I'm not annoyed by the Health and Safety issue, i'm annoyed by the lack of thought that's gone into it.

I think there's a fair few on here who need to get a hobby! If this is such a big deal you really need to get out more. I've identified the offending fence today and...... it's a green metal fence?? Come on Directors let's have an announcement on the management vacancy because we need some quality issues to discuss!

its not the sudden arrival of a fence that has caused an uproar its the whole situation from day 1
it seems every now and then a new hurdle appears
first there was no gate, it seemed i was only one to moan about it and got pretty much the same sort of response on here, lazy this and that etc
fair play the club listened and installed a gate
now literally 1000s clamber to use the gate
the only problem now is we actually need 2 gates as its 50/50 to which way people go once they exit, this causes a bit of a potential troublespot, curable by 2 gates
the fact there is and always has been a massive gate right where one is ideally suited but never open is annoying
its an emergency gate ?
come on we all know which entrance emergency vehicles will use ?
then a fence erected between the north & south stand arrived
great but in the wrong place
it seems its randomly locked for our protection well it actually forces the 100s who use the powerbar to mingle with away fans
these arguments are not about walking an extra few yards
they are about common sense
i know the new fence may prevent fans getting hurt
but what the fans really want is a quick simple exit
i guess a fence was a few quid cheaper than some steps

I believe that due to a lack of positive footballing issues to discuss we get drawn into what are fairly petty matters. In saying this I feel that if the club communicated more clearly and promptly it would resolve some of these irritations. The new management team do appear to be more proactive in building bridges with the supporters though I guess there will always be a minority who will never be happy whatever happens; I doubt even reverting back to the loggerheads and calling the stadium the 'new meadow' would appease them. Oh well wonder when the new manager will be announced. great but in the wrong place it seems its randomly locked for our protection well it actually forces the 100s who use the powerbar to mingle with away fans these arguments are not about walking an extra few yards they are about common sense i know the new fence may prevent fans getting hurt but what the fans really want is a quick simple exit i guess a fence was a few quid cheaper than some steps

Is that the exact same path that is there now and is used each and every match day ? Brilliant !!
