A true Labour stalwart and veteran of the days when there was actually a choice.
A good man who tried to put the people first.
At 96 he had a good innings.

An excellent and compassionate politician and a true socialist when it actually meant something. Such a change from the vacuous dullards that populate The Palace of Westminster these days.
But for a poor media image he could possibly have been our best prime minister for a long time.
RIP. Good knock.

A good and intelligent man and a politician to be trusted, whether or not you agreed with him.
He probably wasn't the right choice as Labour leader in the early 1980s but his treatment by certain sections of the media was shameful. To his credit, he always rose above it.
Our politics is crying out for more like him, in all parties.

He always struck me as a man with a set of principles and convictions that guided his life, and you either agreed or disagreed.
A great politician

People - whatever their political persuasion - always love an old left winger. As this is a democracy our politicians hold a mirror up to ourselves (either local or national). Michael Foot came from an era where people did actually think that it was possible to build a better country for everyone as opposed to anything goes as long as it isn't actually illegal.

People - whatever their political persuasion - always love an old left winger. As I recall people didn't love him very much in the late 70s early 80s. The media's personalised campaign against him was pretty constant.

Michael Foot turned upto the cenotaph in a donkey jacket No he didn't. He turned up in a perfectly respectable coat that certain sections of the media portrayed as a donkey jacket and certain sections of the populace believed them without checking for themselves. Like i said. A poor media image .

I met him once at Shrewsbury station. He and Barbara Castle were on a train to Aberystwyth (think it was when they still had the direct London to Aber train) and he'd just jumped off to pop to the bufffet for him and his wife. Opened the door for him and he shook my hand!
Principled Politician... shame there's so few of those nowadays...
