Thank goodness after watching football over the past 40 odd years I can still honestly say I love the game. My word it has changed in its league structure, type of ball ( I hated those laces ), professional teams and of course the amount of money in the game. The refs are still as bad
Why do I support my local team?
Is it because they are the best team? No.
Do I expect them to win every game? No, but I hope for that result every time.
Do they have the best players? No.
Do I think the manager always gets it right? No, but then what do I know!
Do I think that some players don't care about playing for my team? Very rarely indeed.
Do I think we will get promoted? Yes, but it may be a struggle.
Did I seriously think that we would walk this division? Not a chance.
Do I think we have performed well enough this year? No I don't.
Do I have the answer to why? No and neither does anyone else. All I can do is continue to have faith in my team and the mangement who are paid to try to turn out the best team to get us out of the division that I shed tears over us joining last season.
We lose to Telford in the FA Trophy, a competition that most were saying didn't matter a fig before it started. The vitriol that has been pouring out has left me cold with disappointment. Good luck to Telford in the competition. It means nothing to my ambition for Shrewsbury to get out of this league, in fact it removes a distraction.
My fear is that the negativity that is being generated time and time again on this board and elsewhere will damage the morale of the team and management so that we will start to lose ground in the league and not qualify for the play-offs.
We are in a good position in the league at present, other teams see Shrewsbury as the "Big Fish". They are always up for the game against us, far more than against the likes of Chester or Hereford.
Last year we were facing relegation from the league and the criticism was biting. We are not in that position. Look at the table, see what is possible if the team can perform with confidence and with our support.
If you love your team why not show it through positive support and constructive criticism where it is necessary, not by damning invective towards individuals who really care as much as you do about the results yet their actions on the field have to live up to our high expectations. Do you always perform your job to the highest level?
Shrewsbury Town may not be the major love of my life but it fills a space just behind my wife and kids in my league. It's a good position to be in
