Anyone ever been to Hong Kong and Thailand ? We are off in Jul and are looking for things to do and see, we are just going to bimble around rather than stay in one place. Plan to visit Bridge on river Kwai, elephant safari but are looking for other things to do, so if you've been and know some good info please pass on. Cheers windsor PS Please don't mention the red light area my wife will hit me (again)

Hong Kong....
Things to definitely do.
Victoria Peak, a high viewpoint of the city, spectacular views, go just before dusk, and wath the sunset, and see the skyline as the lights come on.
Take the cliff railway down, interesting journey.
Have a ride on the Star Ferry, good views again, cheap, and it gets you from Kowloon to the shopping areas.
Also, loads of designer gear, electrical equipment at rock bottom prices.
Stanley Market is a good visit too.
Take a boat trip around Aberdeen floating village, see the biggest floating Chinese restaurant in the world.
I loved my 3 days in Hong Kong, and would go back tomorrow.

Never been to HK, but been to Thailand on a number of occasions. Bangkok is a very busy city but so fascinating. The Bridge over the River Kwai is a must, you can visit the Jeath Museum which is a reconsruction of one of the death camps. Also a visit to one of the cemetrys is a must, so moving. The Royal Palace in Bangkok is also a must do. The Floating Market is a good trip as is the Rose Gardens. I am sure you will use the Tuk Tuks to get around in the city, they will scare the hell out of you And a visit to the Red Light District is always good, it is a massive night market that sells all your dodgy clothes and "Rolex" watches. All the naughty bits are out of site, usually upstairs in the bars. These bars are free to get in but very expensive to get out (so I am told). The Thai people are wonderful but you may get the odd one who wants you to go and see a jewellery shop and will take you miles to go and see it. Trips up the River in a Long Tail boat are good fun, they will take you through the Klongs (canals) where you will see real Thai life. Its hot and can be smelly but a brilliant place, hope you have a great time.

Top 3 in Hong Kong Victoria Peak/Star Ferry and Stanley Market watch out for bootleg CD's of say Phil Collins whil is really Phill Le wang packed to look like Phil Collins etc.
Thailand - Thought the coach/train and boat trip to Kanchanaburi and the Bridge worth the money! Grand Place well worth a visit, Pat Pong down the old red light district is an education, just sit at a table buy a drink and watch this sea of humanity and depravity float by!! use the tuk tuks motorised bikes but take a face mask boy do they emit some fumes!!

They run a good long tail boat tour from the pier just under the bridge on the river Kwai that takes in most of the local sites which we thought were good value. Also would recommend getting out up towards the Burmese border - some rafting and walks through the rainforest
If you're looking for beaches inThailand I guess the least developed island I know would be Khoa Tao - get there by getting a bus or train to Chumporn and then a boat out. Haven't been there for a few years and it might have been subjected to the same 'upgrades' that have aflicted Khoa Chang et al . Most backpackers stay in Banglampphu -it actually has quite a range of accomodation.
If I were you I would avoid the Tuk Tuks -most of the guys driving them are working 18 hour days and quite a lot take speed to try and stay awake. Taxi meters are cheap and air conned.
A good day trip out of Bangkok by train (about 2-3 hours) is Ayattaya lots of temples in traditional Thai style .Again you can organise a pick up which will take you around the sites
