Since 1984 and in no particular order (but with an understandable bias pre-1989:
1/ Bernard 2/ Gary Hackett 3/ Gerry Daly 4/ Wayne Clarke 5/Perker 6/Steve Cross 7/Tony Kelly 8/John McGinlay 9/Nigel Pearson 10/ Victor
and the worst... 1/Mickey Brown 2/ John Gayle 3/Simkin 4/Brian Williams (crap! - by the standards we expected then - likewise Dave Waller) 5/Devon White 6/Robbie 'The Camel' Turner 7/Throb 8/Tim Clarke 9/Rioch 10/Mickey Brown again

So season 93/94 and May 2000 Mickey Brown did nothing for you then?

In his first spell (up to 1991) Brown was usually the weakest player in the side (clearly not up to old Div2 standard) and possibly only picked as tokenism. Those with memories that stretch back that far will recall he was NOT a favourite of the Salop public who could be heard shouting their opinion of Brown in non too delicate language from the back of the Wakeman stand.
He then slagged off Shrewsbury when at Bolton where he wasn't good enough.
Second spell, he scored a memorable goal against Crewe in 1992/3 but did bugger all else in a team Carl Griffiths couldn't carry to the play-offs. In 1993/4 he admittedly had a good season, but no better than Walton, Williams (both went on to better things), Patterson, Taylor, a resurgent Dean Spink and old lags like Clarke and Hockaday (and even Summerfield).
He started the next season brightly before taking the money and running to Preston, where he wasn't good enough.
Third spell he was old and slow as well as crap. Scoring at Exeter was I suppose memorable but it kept Ratcliffe in a job for another two years until the inevitable happened, and he never did much else special.
In short, a quite average player who scored a memorable goal once every two seasons, and a real injustice that he over Colin Griffin's record appearances for the Town.

no tommy lynch mentoined - great player! No he wasn't, he was slow and quite awful in terms of skill but was a trier which endeared him to the fans.

these are not necessarily the best players I've seen at the meadow but the ones I've most enjoyed watching
Gerry Daly Victor Kasule Paul Maguire Ross Maclaren Bob Wardle John McGinley Nigel Pearson Brian Hornsby Alex McGregor Tony Kelly
Honourable mentions - Bernard McNally, Carl Griffiths, Sammy Chapman, Tommy Lynch, Alan Durban and Luke prior to this season
ps cynicalshrew what do you mean Mickey Brown got picked because of tokenism? He was the token crap player?

Dave Waller, what a fanfare he got when he arrived, he was goig to score loads of goals and failed to adjust, right?
Did he come from, and go back to, Chesterfield? My memory isn't as good as it used to be. He had a moustache?

Some great players named above but I am surprised nobody mentions Bernard McNally, a superb all round player who ended up playing in the top league

I'm glad none of you have mentioned Gerry Daly's managerial ability, he was terrible!!
class act on the field though, his vision was wasted in the conference. If I had a pound for every time Gerry put the ball out play on the left wing, whilst Gary Osborne was 20 yards behind play eating a burger or scratching his arse or soemthing, I would be rich.
The crowd used to get on at Daly all the time, because they couldn't see that the other players weren't good enough to play around him.

In no particular order
Bomber Walton Throb Spink Stevens -first time around Darren Currie Austin Berkley Evo- yes he hit the "hollywood" passes but he also did a whole lot more Aiston Luke
And Benny Gall just lurking outside of the top 10 with Eagle and Hanmer-didnt he play something like 100 straight games for us?
