Well I think i've lost the will to live. Yesterday in the smoke room at work I was reading my book "The Soft Machine" and this lad (about 19) said, and I quote " I don't see the point in books when you have TV.
Oh yeah and he has a 6 month old son.

Wasn't it Orwells vision of 1984 that had books / libraries down as means of germs being spread and with TV it means it is easier for "powers" to spread propaganda and take away your imagiination so that you see things their way. Oh my word it must have started then

1984 is my favourite book.
You can draw a few parralels with today.
Spin Doctors act very much like the Ministry of Information. Our enemies are now our friends and vice versa.
The english language is being reduced via Text and internet slang.
Authorities being able to see indide your house via the TV. Webcams anyone?
It is sad that people don't feel the need to expand their immagination via books.
Anyone ever hear the one by Bill Hicks were he is in a restaurant and the Waitress asks "What you Readin' for?"

1984 is my favourite book. You can draw a few parralels with today. I think the major one is the constant war. The war against terrorism is a war that cannot be "won". The enemy can be shifted as suitable, Bin Ladin morphed into Saddam and then Al Zaqawi. This in turn means the people have to put up with intrusions in their personal freedom, ID cards, Patriot Act etc. This is real and happening now. It is pretty scary.

Don’t be so condescending. If he doesn’t read, so what he doesn’t read. I love to read but i don’t impose my allegedly superior position on others, nor do I smirk at “half Whits” who don’t read war and piece every week. Live and let live and stop feeling so smug and superior !

I don't think anyone's being superior here, they're simply pointing out a deficiency in today's society.
Although TV is an excellent medium, there's no doubt that reading improves spelling, grammar and helps one's imagination to flutter.
I never used to enjoy reading when I was younger but am a big fan now.

it's all about choice, i rarely read books and never have, just find the whole book thing quite boring....
though i can get something like the wasp factory and read it in one night, then someone else will recomed something else and it'll take me weeks to try and plough through it.

I you like reading books then read them, if you prefer to watch telly, then watch telly. Should people be made to read books? Or should people be allowed to choose. No one is making you use web cams, if you dont want one then dont have one. Personally i find it far more scarey and a far greater indictment of our society that millions of people get excited about 12 attention seeking losers being locked inside a house for a month.

Out of the two I believe books are the better medium. My teenagers both read very well and can frequently be found with their head in books (they skate, play music in a band and football so they do have other interests) this is a direct result of reading stories and learning to enjoy books together when they were younger.
However TV, Playstation, ipods seem to have taken over from many of the traditional areas of parenting. This in my opinion is why reading skills are falling in todays youth.
And on that subject has anyone read the Da Vinci (excuse spelling) code ?
Should I pop along and buy it ?

noticed that people read a lot less in spain. they read newspapers that are all pretty bland and there are several daily football papers available largely aimed at madrid or barca fans.

Danielson...My spelling is fine except for one mistake. Get a life... Che, You are one of my favourite revolutionaries. I just found it amusing that your very well made point contained an eror such as it did. You are right that if people want to spend their days sat in front of the television then that is their choice. It is a very sad choice in my opinion that people feel it is the only thing they can do of an evening. However it is their choice and I respect that.

I'm an occasional reader, mainly on Nights at work, but once I find an author who amuses me, I end up "buying the company", as it were.
I storm my way through Robert Rankin, Iain (and M.) Banks, Bernard Cornwell, Tolkien, Pratchett and of course the Potter franchise, but can I figure my way through Gormenghast? Can I heck as like!

Let people do what they want, read books , watch tv play computer games, maybe even some exercise! But surely there is no reason to be bored and hanging round the streets causing trouble and beating innocent people to death? Now more than ever there is more for young people to do.
This is a scary world!

The problem with TV is that you pretty much have to except what is being fed to you. Opinions get taken as truths and then shined up into documentarys, while with books you can usually find another opinion.
The internet is replacing books for reading matter, instead of being engaged for long periods of time and getting to the end of the book is the excitement, now you can drop on to website like this and amuse your senses in very short space of time.

I dont admit to being the most educated person around but the only book/publication I can get through reading is FourFourTwo magazine, I just dont have the patience to read books but I have gone through the Paul Gascoigne, Mickey Thomas and Brian Clough autobiographies, cant stand fictional stuff tho I just dont have time for it.
