I thought exactly the same 'protecting the nation' also involves 50p a pint more profit between 6 and 7

It's a profit thing being masqueraded as an anti-drinking drive without a doubt. I was watching a pub spokesman on sky news yesterday and they pointed out that alcohol was much cheaper to buy in a supermarket than in a pub so seeing as the pubs had got their house in order maybe it was time for the government to force supermarkets to change (increase) their prices for alcohol. If the government do that then where are drinkers going to go? The pub.

But happy hours are notoriously successul profit-wise?
Sadly this is a case of the minority (albeit a large one) ruining things for the majority.

Wetherspoons don't do happy hours - their prices stay the same all day, so no need to rush your cheap drinks into an hour
