Having watched the FA Cup Final and Champions League semis recently, it was encouraging to see Lampard, Gerrard, the Coles, Rooney, Ferdinand, etc in such good form- but it made me wonder whether it will be the same situation this time next year before the World Cup- will the Championships come one year too late for our in-form star players

Players such as rooney and gerrard will just get better, I think england will have a stronger team as a whole next year. Younger players such as robinson, wright phillips and downing will have more experiance behind them.

I think you may have a point chaz, but those who that applies to seem to be the older players such as gerrard and lampard, terry etc, who i think generally will only get better to next year.
The rest of the England squad is made up of younger players who could well be playing in the championship in a couple of years, and were we to enter a big comp this summer, then i think we would be found out by the lack of depth to our squad. We need to spend this next year trying to build up a consistent squad of younger players to compliment the superstars, and who can perform consistently at a decent level.

I think you will have as good a squad as any at the World Cup next summer and will as usual cruise through your group stages.
It is then all about winning the big game you face along the way.
England had 2 excellent chances to win tournaments in 2002 and 2004 but failed due to sub-par performances on the day itself.
It seems almost to be some kind of mental complex?

I think tiredness after one of the most competitive leagues and amount of games is also an issue
and the dull Swede doesn't let us play in an english way
1-0 up on each occasion, and then dull technical rubbish that we will never be any good at

You are forgetting that 10 of our top players are injured and can't go to the USA. Perhaps as well it is not a World Cup year.

Dont really see how having a winter break would make much difference.
it would just enable the premiers**te teams to take off for a week or so and play some exibition matches.
We can't win, if a team does badly its often because they are ring susty from a week or so off.
If another team does badly its because they've played too many games.

I agree Gareth but there were key players missing for those tournaments and we didnt have the strength in depth that maybe we have now. Also we have young players who are used to playing in very big games for their clubs and I would hope that this experience will help us in the latter stages of the big tournaments

its promising that we now have two left backs (Bridges and Cole) and have a natural left sided player (Downing) as well as Cole who can play out wide. Add Wright Phillips, Lampard, Gerrard, Beckham, Owen, Rooney, Defoe, Vassel amongst others into the mix and we actually have a bit of variety

But I can guarantee there being a 2 week media debate about England's left-sided 'problem' prior to Summer 2005. ;D

Steady, the Welsh peaked much earlier about 1958 infact I guessed that would be the response before even entering the thread. Quite correct though, although Autumn 2002 would be a better guess.
