Bluewater in Kent has banned the wearing of hooded tops. This has been backed by Tony Blair.
What do you think?

I often wear hooded sweatshirts in the winter, and I've been known to wear baseball caps in the summer. Oh no, where will I shop?

Seems to me to be a knee jerk load of bolox kind of reaction. When my Mum was young, people felt intimidated by drain pipe trousers, greased back hair and leather jackets, when i was young, people felt intimidated by dr martin boots, rolled up jeans and shaved heads. Now its hoodies.

Give the hoodies a spelling test and ask if they are regular visitors to McDonalds. If they fail the test and say yes to MaccyD's, Then ban them for being a Chav ;D

On a serious note, don't you think that a group (I'll refrain from the word "gang") of youths wearing hooded tops congregated together can be intimidating -and not only to the elderly and females on their own? Again, don't you think that a positive policy such as this - which surely wasn't taken lightly - which will no doubt go a long way to reassuring members of the public is a good thing? It's the fear of crime which has a high priority in people's thinking and this type of positive action will make them feel more secure. Place your partner or your parents in an environment such as was regular feature in the Bluewater Shopping Mall before the ban, and how would you feel?

Lots of people must see it as a good thing - Visitor numbers up 23% last week after the ban was announced.

excellent points. personally, i don't like the 'judge by appearances' idea. (last night, a friend had her handbag stolen by, sure enough, a very 'normal' looking guy.) i, being tall, find people with umbrellas both scarey and dangerous - ban them! also i think it's a ridiculously right wing, nanny state policy.

The problem this country has is the complete hysteria that spreads across the country whenever figures are released or the daily mail reports some factually unsound story.
Unfortunatly the fear of crime is such that many people worry when they see a group of young lads, they see people with lots of piercings, they see blacks or asians, in fact when they see people that differ in appearence to themselves and maybe in a group of more than 2.
The truth is that crime levels are falling, yet the fear of crime is continuing to rise, anyone would think we lived in a wartorn state where the police were on the payrolls of the underworld.
maybe people should chill out a bit, not take everything the daily mail and express say literally.
Failing that maybe the security guards that these centres employ could do their job....
what next setting up checkpoint and splitting up all groups of young people from the ages of 12-19???
Maybe we could ban fat people? or people with prams? After all I find them more of a menace than people wearing hoddies, they are slower, tend to vear about the place and often inconsiderate of the fact they are in a public place, not to mention they take up more room.

Why not catch people who HAVE committed a crime, rather than targetting people because they look apparently look like crimnals. Some people are intimidated by groups of football supporters, should we be banned as well? I like this site, see how moral panics come and go. Gypsies, hoddies, terrorists, asyslum seekers, feral youths blah blah f*cking blah www.mailwatch.co.uk/

Yes, but so is a group of civilised young people all wearing football shirts, so is a group of young people with skinheads, so is a group of young people wearing burberry ( to some). Some people fing a group of young people laughing and joking a bit loudly intimidating. We surely have to ask ourselves what kind of dull and lifeless society we have created if the most exciting thing a group of young people can find to do is stand/sit around shopping malls.

This is a great example of applying technology to a problem.
Kids loitering - CCTV - s**t they've put their hoods up - well **** me how did they think of that?
I just love the way that you can't walk in any town nowadays without being filmed.
