So Carlisle have repeated our feat and returned from the dead in just one season. No doubt the followers of non league football would have been disappointed by this and have preferred Stevenage, one of their own, to have triumphed in the play-offs.
Even though our club benefitted from 2 up, 2 down I really wonder whether it is justified. For the last couple of seasons, the Conference has been a squabble fought out mainly by ex league teams and for the 2nd year running, two ex league teams have regained their status. Despite the money invested in the non-league pyramid it doesnt seem to be generating potential new league teams at the rate that 2 up 2 down warrants.
Its quite a few years now since automatic promotion from the Conference and I am sure that non-league officials would have had a vision of having a team in the Championship by now. But as it is, the majority of their number are stuck in Division 3. Surely 1 up and 1 down is sufficient!

I was always in favour of 2 up and 2 down. And even more so when we went down. How long would we have been stewing in the Conferernce for had it been 1 up and 1 down? I dread to think.

I think it's been of great benefit.
Massively increased crowds have resulted because of it and the image of the Conference have also improved.
OVer the past 3 years at least, there have only been two teams capable of winning the League past Xmas, so had it been for the absence of the play-offs, most games would have been worthless and would have seen lower attendances as a result.

of course its worth it, not being biased because we did benefitted from it, but because it really is just like an extension of the league. and it was about time it was considered so, the addition of the playoffs to the conference have given other teams that added chance of going up. if there was no play offs in the conference then there would obviously be only one team in it,but it can certainly help non league teams-not just ex league clubs- to get to the football league for the first time

The conference now is mostly a collection of former league clubs with only a few of the stronger non league clubs left in it. The extra promotion place has stimulated the competition and crowds.
Give it a few years you will have three up and down and the formalisation of Englands fifth professional league.
