Now I DO realise I'm just inviting a lot of cheeky answers!! But HAVE you ever been paid for doing something you regard as just a hobby? I have a few times, but never enough to give up my day job, which makes me think I can't be good enough!!! I've done a BIT of freelance journalism. A few things for The Liverpool Daily Post- but a long, long tme ago. The last couple of things I got paid for was an article for a magazine for parents, about helping children with schoolwork. It was called 'Starkids'- but they bought and updated an old reading scheme (Janet and John) then went out of business (I got paid first, though!!) I've just finished something I'm going to try and publish when I've got it right. I'd LOVE to do publicity stuff for STFC!!!

Between the ages of 15 and 17 I worked at my local golf course during the summer and in the evenings. As it was always quiet my shifts involved hitting range balls for several hours at a time or watching the TV ;D

Used to sell a little bit on ebay as a hobby, but then turned it into my full time work. Have bought a few items through e-bay in the past but beware of Pay-pal, I paid 99p for a set or records (only bid) these were not sent, total with carriage £5.99. As payments are supposed to be protected I expected my £5.99 back but was credited with £5.59, the difference I realise is small, Paypal said "it was all they could recover from the seller" as a matter of principal I asked for a refund and closed my account, they say under internet banking rules it is illegal to refund amounts of under £6 and refuse flatly to refund my money. My previous purchase was £168 so I suppose it could have been much worse.

If using paypal it's best to use a credit card. If you use a credit card then you will be protected 100%. If paypal cannot recover any / all of your money then the credit card company will. Paypal will then pass the debt on to the seller and their account will be left in negative figures if need be.
It's in the small print somewhere that paypal will recover as much of your money as possible, but will not take the seller into debt themselves (I don't know why?).
I myself got stung the same way as you. I only paid £4 for something but I used money I already had in my paypal account. When it didn't turn up I made a claim and only got £2.50 back.
Although there are many problems associated with paypal (mainly for the seller) it is something I have been using since it opened maybe 4 or 5 years ago. I have had buyers use it 10,000 or more times and I have only had a charge back initiated againt me once. And that was last week. As a buyer I have had to make claims half a dozen times and apart from losing £1.50 once, I got a full refund the other times. Had I sent a cheque I would have lost hundreds of pounds.

Occasionally being in a band pays off, in my previous band in particular we got some pretty decent support slots which sometimes resulted in a tidy little payment, but on the flip side there were also nights where we ended up out of pocket, particularly putting on our own shows outside of the local area.
I also get £30 a week EMA money from college as we are a low income family if that counts.
