Nurses Day 2005 - a chance to celebrate nursing
Nurses' day is when everyone can celebrate nursing and the valuable role nurses play in health care and health promotion. Nursing can be rewarding for many people and Nurses' Day is a time when the positive aspects can be promoted to people thinking about their future career. It's also an opportunity to promote nursing to people in general and help them appreciate the benefits of nursing can bring to their lives.
Nurses' Day is an event celebrated throughout the world and is supported by the RCN and the International Council of Nurses (ICN).
12 May is celebrated because it is the birth of Florence Nightingale, a key figure in nursing history and a figure who still provides inspiration today. 2005 is the bicentenary of the birth of Mary Seacole, an equally inspirational figure in nursing history.
Nurses' Day is an opportunity to stress the pivotal role that nurses in play in making sure people get the best care. Day to day, nurses are at the bed side making a real difference to the well-being of individuals whilst at the same time they are increasingly holding leadership positions where they have power and influence to challenge and change.
Inside and outside the NHS
Whether you work within or outside of the NHS, you can use Nurses' Day to promote nursing and to encourage more people to consider nursing as a career or return to nursing if they have left. For those currently practising nursing, Nurses' Day could be used as an event to focus on career progression.
Influencing
Nurses' Day can also be used as a way to influence people, like employers, politicians and the general public. For example you might want to use Nurses' Day as a way of highlighting local issues and press for changes or you may simply want to highlight the valuable work you do and ensure that your views are taken on board in the future.
Celebrating nursing around the globe
Nurses' Day is an international event too - it's promoted around the world. The International Council of Nurses is using Nurses' Day this year to campaign on counterfeit and substandard medicines. Targeting counterfeit and substandard medicines is the name of the campaign and you can find out more from the ICN.
