Haz is about ready to move up from his Hippo Irons which have done him well as a start up set, to something a bit more sophisticated. He's thinking along the lines of Wilson Deep Red II's, Mizuno MX-17. or possibly TaylorMade RAC OS 11's.
Any good golfers out there with advice on choice? He wants to get a handicap sorted and hopes to crack 20 over the next 18 months or so.

Best go see your pro at the club.
If he is any good (the pro) he will go down to the practice area with you for half an hour and let you try a few versions out.

Its good advice - trouble is that the clubs he wants are about £100-150 cheaper on t'internet than at the clubshops, and its a bit tricky waltzing in the club with your bright shiney new clubs in front of the pro who gave you the advice - but not the irons

Ask him what discount he will give you for cash He will match the net price if you tell him.

Try here, www.epinions.com/sprt-Golf-Golf_Clubs-Allbut if you are serious about your Golf I would want to feel the product in my hand and out on the course. The clubs Haz is interested in is serious kit and a lot of money. I would not buy those over the internet.

Thanks fellas
apparently the new American Golf shop in Telford do a fitting and advisory service so I think I'll take Haz there on Saturday for a look and try out.
But, their price on Wilson Deep Reds is £399, County-Golf (on line) do them for £299 with a free Wilson stand bag - big difference! I've used County Golf in the past - very quick and efficient (provided they have what you want!).

I'm in the market for some new clubs too. My DTRs have run me well but I fancy a new set - anyone else got any recommendations?

I have the same as PILCH, Ping Eye 2's.
The greatest set of Irons ever made by Ping ;D
Seriously, they are beautifully weighted and haven't got massive club heads like some of the new irons on the market.
The bloke who sold them to me says he regrets selling them everytime I see him. Whatever Harry opts for stay away from those horrendous King Cobras.

It's vitally important that you get your clubs fitted for you , for how you play - not how you want to play.
You would play football with he wrong size boots or shorts and expect to be any good.
The £30 or so that you spend on getting them properly adjusted for you will get paid back in spades if your serious about playing the game i.e. once a week. Most people taller than 5'10" will require a 2 degrees upight adjustment.
Most places will price match to a point with the internet or try to make it up - chuck in some lessons. I would always buy kit from someone in the face because when you want something altered they'll be more than happy to help as opposed to your ever helpful www.
Example :- I bought some footjoy shoes from my pro shop with a 2 year waterproof gaurantee. 12 months later they start to leak and I give them back - two days later I have a brand new pair of shoes with another 2 year gaurantee. Try that with your internet dealer.
The Mizuno 17 are a nice piece of kit that should see anyone down from a 20 handicap to 5ish. If you want to get really serious the Mizuno 33/32 are the business but have the price to go with them.

The Mizuno MX17 are very good clubs and there's not much around to beat them at the price. Mizuno build quality is excellent. Taylormade's are a decent set too. Would certainly put those two above the Wilsons. Another one in the price bracket you might consider are those from MD Golf - quality forged cavities, great clubs, tremendous value. www.mdgolf.co.uk Todays Golfer liked them..... www.mdgolf.co.uk/pr_tg_02_05.html

You cannot go wrong with Mizuno irons, they are not the most played iron on tour for nothing. I switched to a second hand set of old Mizuno's and they hit the ball really sweet with a lovely high soft landing flight and easily a club longer than my old irons.

"Todays golfer" have rated the new Macgregor V Foil M455 irons as their best buy in the latest magazine. Oldgit has managed to track down an amazing deal on them. Any1 had any experience with them? I'm basically lookin 4 a set to use over the next few years and see it a good idea to get decent quality clubs that i will enjoy using. Cheers for the advice everyone!! p.s sorry for the Cr@p round on sunday Ant and Phil

A very forgiving club for the high/mid handicapper and yet one which also suits lower handicap players. Recently bought a set myself....they're excellent, and the custom fitting options are as good as you'll get.

Owd lad, did you buy them from anywhere in Shropshire? Oi...less of the "owd"!! Yes I did, got them from American Golf in Telford. At the time they were doing an extra 20% off their usual prices, so got a good deal (paid about £470). They also have a fitting centre there which is pretty good. There is always an element of trust that they are giving you the right advice but there a couple of PGA pros there to help you out, and they are guaranteed - i.e if the loft/lie etc isn't quite right they'll adjust them free of charge. Had a bit of a delay in getting them delivered but otherwise no complaints - even won a trophy playing my first round with them!!
