I seem to remember Graham Turner having a major clearout in 1982 after we had been involved in a real battle to stay in the old 2nd division. Players like Biggins, King, Tong and Dungworth were released to be replaced by young, keen players such as Nigel Pearson and Wayne Williams together with more experienced pros like Gary Stevens and Alan Brown. For the next three seasons we finished in the top ten in the division (i.e. one of the top thirty , or thereabouts, in the country.) The time was right then as it is now.

We've got to have faith in GP's abilities at scouting for the right players/using his contacts and him getting a few quid out of the board to go with the wage savings that today's "cull" will have. I've just finished my 11th season following the Town, and apart from occasional flashes of brilliance and a few months here & there of putting a good run together, that period has generally seen us playing pants GP is right - the squad we have has got us to 4th bottom in the league, which whilst having achieved the 1st objective of making sure we didn't go down, means as a collective they aren't very good. We all want better, and GP does as well - let's see what he can do. I expect to see a lot of young, tall & very fit players next season with a couple of older heads/playmakers.

Well said Mark Some people seem to think the world has ended today because of some of the players GP has axed, but the '82 comparison from Slackbladder is a good shout. Most of those players were good enought to get us out of Div 3 but could not cut it in Div 2.
