Received this post today from a friend who always sends interesting and thought provoking things- thought it would be a good one for polling day!
Question 1:
If you knew a woman who was pregnant, who had 8 kids already, three who were deaf, two who were blind, one mentally retarded, and she had syphilis, would you recommend that she have an abortion? Read the next question before looking at the response for this one. Question 2:
It is time to elect a new world leader, and only your vote counts.
Here are the facts about the three candidates. Candidate A. Associates with crooked politicians, and consults with astrologist. He's had two mistresses. He also chain smokes and drinks 8 to 10 martinis a day. Candidate B. He was kicked out of office twice, sleeps until noon, used opium in college and drinks a quart of whiskey every evening. Candidate C.
He is a decorated war hero. He's a vegetarian, doesn't smoke, drinks an occasional beer and never cheated on his wife.
Which of these candidates would be your choice? Decide first... no peeking, then scroll down for the response.
...............................................................................
................................................................................
................................................................................
................................................................................
.................................................................................
.................................................................................. ------------------------------------------------------------- Candidate A is Franklin D. Roosevelt. Candidate B is Winston Churchill. Candidate C is Adolph Hitler. And, by the way, on your answer to the abortion question: If you said YES, you just killed Beethoven. Pretty interesting isn't it? Makes a person think before judging someone!

Hitler married her, then the next day she a cyanide pill and he shot himself. Hitler shot himself because he was so paranoid that he thought the cyanide in his pill had been replaced with sugar

Go and consult your history books, he may have made an "interesting chancellor" may have flirted between different political parties and may have put a number of peoples noses out of joint. But he was just about the best war time PM/President a country could wish to have I knowledge is da bomb, and you contain it 9which i very much doubt) you are a danger to those all around you. Though adolf married her the day before, or a couple of days before they committed suicide.

As to your response I am somone who has just gained an A on the History of Britain between the wars at As level so yes i do have knowledge on the subject, in contrary to what you assume. Yes i do have some respect for what he did during the war, however, everyone choses to forget how Winston (i dont know what my political stance is i just want fame) Chuchill treated the poor miners after ww1, forcing them to accept lower wages and work such horrendous conditions. It was also the fault of Winston Churchill as a chancellor that Britain had a general strike in 1925. His decision to return Britain to the Gold Standard almost lead Britains economy to collapse. He treated the working class like scum! He only looked out for is fellow upper class, he was a ruthless man who had to get his own way. Cheated so many of the hard factory workers from ww1 by taking away the massive profits. Yea he did good in the war. But my point was just that he was an arse. I wouldnt vote for him in a non-war Britain. KNOWLEDGE IS THE BOMB!

Your living up to your user name Lazy Shrew obviously need to do those studies again just about the silliest post ever on this board (except for cynicals) Hitler was responsible for the death of 6 million Jews for starting a world war in which millions more were killed Churchill identified the Nazi threat early and led the country to victory yes his record was mixed in peace time but not disastrous If you got an A exams really must be getting easier if you think Churchill is as sinister and corrupt as Hitler

No. Have I made any racist remarks? No. Am i a hard line supporter of UKIP? No. On what grounds do you feel you have the right to relate me to cynical, non. Ok, a agree that comparing him to Hitler was over the top. I exaggurated to stress my point. I praise Churchill fully for what he did during the 1939 war. However, WiganShrew's origional question was would you vote for Winston Churchill, and no i would not for a number of reasons, he was a conservative (i go for labour), economically he was as confused as a dog chasing his own tail. I am in no way condeming his remarkable war-time acheivments, i was simply stressing the fact that i would not pick him as leader of this country today and I appologise if you feel i was too extreme in doing so.

For anyone who didnt get to see Downfall over the last few weeks stick it straight on the top of your DVD's to buy list. Ok so it has been criticised for its humanisation of Hitler but the portrayal of his last few days and the people around him is enlightening.
As with Passion of the Christ its wrong to say that I enjoyed the film but it needs to be seen its hard to explain and I'm not saying that I empathise in any way with Hitler for who he was but since seeing it and having a very sketchy outline of family history relating to his elite army (due to conscription) I now have an underlying almost fascination to try and comprehend him

Difference between inept and sinister. Churchill was a leader of emn and a leader of the nation. He was never going to make a decent chancellor, and yes you are right the decision to take britain back onto the gold standard was diasterous, but lets be honest the country was in the s**t, long before then. The fact is he got a lot wrong, but he was one of the few to identify the Nazi threat in the early 30s, a period in which he was cast out into the wilderness. He summoned the resolve in a British nation that wasnt particuarly ready for a war nor willing to enter a war, to summon the grit and determination to stick out the second war of attrition within one generation (so much for the war to end all wars...) That can not be taken away from him

Churchill was an absolutely incredible person. He changed 20th century history in a positive manner, and I find it difficult for anyone to shoot down that one generalist remark. LazyShrew, I suggest the book Churchill by Roy Jenkins - an excellent read and one which will give you a bit more of an insight into the man (and his weaknesses) than either an A Level textbook or a stack of 'right on' remarks by people who own Fidel Castro memorabilia.

There is also the thought that without Churchill, we maybe still wouldnt be free to critisise Hitler. Winston was the right man for the time. He also saw the threat from our communist allies. Listen to some of his wartime speeches on tape, they are still both moving and rousing. "Onward Brittannia, long live the cause of freedom, God save the king!"
