Be careful - from a Libertines board today
"I'm being sued by the BPI well, its my mother's computer (i haven't got one) so it is addressed to her but as she dosn't go on .org but i thought some people may be interested, a warning if you like. we had about 1,500 songs on kazaa, and now they want £2,500 by next thursday or the fine goes up tp £4,000 (i'm not sure how and why they decided upon this figure). I confess, its all true though, i'm not gonna pretend otherwise, all those songs were downloaded onto the computer. The problem i have with all this is that i love buying albums, there are few greater pleasures to me than getting an album by a band who are new to me and obsessively listening to it for as long as it takes me to buy another album. But often if you've never heard any songs by a band you're less likely to get the album on blind faith or a friends reccommendation etc. and thats where downloading and kazaa comes in. i'm pretty dense at computers so kazaa was the only one i knew how to use, but i'd find some song titles on amazon and then download a few on kazaa. This is an extremely helpful way of deciding whether you want to buy the album or not. try before you buy from the comfort of your (parents) own home. I did this only last week with the wedding present, i don't think i would have bought 'bizarro' and 'seamonsters' if i hadn't heard them on a computer first, but they're brilliant albums and my life is better for purchasing them.
I think that the BPI think that people are downloading songs from an album and making a copied cd of it, lots of people do this but, well i haven't done that for a long time. i love getting the case with the photo on the cover, the inlay, tracklisting and a pretty picture on the cd itself, it's just much better and i have no problem with spending money on them. So in a long-winded way what i'm trying to say is that using kazaa has helped me spend more money on albums, i'd guess i've spent at least £200 this year on cd's and lots more last year. So my only gripes with this fine is that i've already paid for the vast majority of the music i downloaded and therefore a considerable percentage of the fine.
As far as i know i'm one of 33 people who got this letter but i think there are more to be sent out, so if you have a similar amount of songs and are sharing them, watch out because you could be next.
Also if anyone has any advice or can think of an ingenious way to get out of paying it then pray tell, i think we are trying to get it reduced to £2,000 as we can't see any other way at the moment and me mum dosn't really want to go to prison just yet.
Do you think this is fair?
i know they are entitled to do this legally, and i don't want to sound like a whinger but this dosn't really sit very well with me at the moment. but anyway i'd be interested to hear any comments, even if they're: "serves you right you little music thief"
x"

Thats fair enough, its not as if the warnings havent been out for an age.
Can quite honestly say I have I have downloaded anywhere near that figure (1500) and anyway the large majority I have done have been stuff not available on cd as its extinct.
