in the 80s we were 8th in the old second div and there was talk of what would happen if we actualy went up! would the club want to go up! could they afford to! Well if in ten years time we are back in that situation with a new ground of 10.000 seats could we afford to go up and would the board put the extra cash in to give a final push for promotion? would it kill the club if we did get there like it so nearly as so many clubs a lot bigger than ours? i know it is dream land but just somthing to think about.

Wouldnt want to get there to be honest, championship is as far as we need to or should ever aspire to.
I would probably stop going to watch them if we ever got in the premiership, it just doesnt appeal to me.

it would be amazing if we made the premiership
it would be just like the old 2nd division all over again but better, even if we lost every game it would be worth it

Whether STFC end up in the premiership or the Unibond I shall carry on supporting regardless.

Shrewsbury in the premiership! thats the ultimate dream....
Instead of wondering if we were going to beat the drop out of the league, we could be fighting for European places.
Kids in replica shirts all over the UK.
And we can all say we were there the day we got out of the Conference (except me, I never made it to Stoke)

JP - I Can honestly say i would not go to any game involving Shrewsbury in the premiership, it just does not appeal and would take so much away from the experiance.
Championship is as far as it goes for me, im sure my place on the terraces would be taken up by some prawn sandwich loving merchant banker!

Thats complete crap. a supporter supports the team, regardless of the division that team is in.
I can, to agree take the point that moving up in divisions could have, in the past taken some of the gloss of playing in those divisions, indeed, I stopped going after promotion to the old division 2 in 1979, but there were other factors. but one of the main ones was violence on the terraces, bigger clubs, more fans, violent society.
There is little violence now, at all levels of football, and I for one would love to see STFC playing teams at the highest level.
I realy cannot see how any supporter would not want the club to do as well as they can!!!

There are charms to supporting a side like shrewsbury that simply dont exist in the premiers**te or championship to a certain extent.
Its not just about the quality of football, its also about the social side, the currie nights, the quizes, the pre match beer, WNB, footy matches, sharing banter during the match, being able to move ablout, feeling like an individual, the more community minded club etc.
Some of this wil be lost once we move to an all seater stadium, but most of it would be lost if we made the prem.
Prices would shoot throught the roof,a lot of us would be forced out of going (demand and cost), club would be a completely different entity, we wouldn't recognise most of the people at the matches etc.
Whilst the club will still say Shrewsbury Town football club on the label, i fear it would no longer contanin any of the characteristics of the club that i fell in love with.
Yes I'd probably go for a season or so, but I'm pretty sure I'd lose interest within a couple of seasons. and retreat to an armchair at home.
I'd rather pay £9 and be standing on an away terrace somewhere in div1/2 on a saturday afternoon, than have to pay £35+ to attend an away match at White Hart Lane on sunday evening....

Fair comment. but would you want to be there on a Wednesday night to watch us play Bayern Munich, or Juventus in the first leg of the UEFA cup quarter final or something.
I sure as hell would.

yes but not if the club had in the process become a faceless PLC, dicated and run by people whom we've never met let alone have a clue what they do or where they are based. Not if I can't go/stand/sit with people I know and my mates. Not if it compromises everything that a football club is supposed to stand for.

Town top three in the prem needing to beat man Utd to gain a Champs League place and if we win United are relegated......oooooohhhhhh heaven

Look at Fulham,
Great they made Europe, had lots of big signings etc... however they have control whatsover on what happens with their club.
Their club is owned by an egmaniac who still has long term plans to build houses on the ground. They've had to play in QPR, they have an unceartain future and the ground appears to be full of people who never experienced division 3 football and find it disguesting that they are struggling in the prem. Oh and tickets are quite expensive, stupid kick off times, £3+ for a programme, its just a joke.

Somerset, why is that crap? I dont tell you how to think do i?
Playing in the premiership does not appeal to me, if i wanted to watch premiership football i have a good choice locally and also i could subscribe to Sky, i do neither because i prefer lower league football, its where the real people play, and watch and enjoy!
Championship is as far as my my paying support would stretch.

Following a Premiership side takes just as much dedication as following a League 2 side.
We'd have to sacrifice heck of a lot more than I do at the moment to go and watch Salop home and away in the Premiership.

If you support Shrewsbury now i do not understand why you would stop just because they went to the premiership! If you support them you support them. You dont just stop because they become good.

I said i would not go to watch them , i didnt say i would stop supporting them... Do people actually read posts or do they just scan for what they want to see in it? I dont see a problem with not wanting to watch top flight football, the only matches i watch are England games or the Euros/World Cup games, this facination with the premiership just doesn't reach into my heart at all. In fact i despise everything premiership. "I pity the fool who doesnt know hes a fool"

Barnsley, Swindon, Oldham, Wimbledon, and possibly Wigan, to name a few of the "small" teams to have played in the top division. In hindsight (apart from Wigan) it would be interesting to ask their supporters "was it worth it?"
Shrewsbury have played Chelsea, West Ham, Leeds etc in the past and I'd love to see them play Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool etc. in the future.
Would it be worth it though? Probably.

We're definitely in dream land with this thread If Town got to the Premiership, there would be positives in terms of lots more cash, better players, more exposure, trying to play in Europe, encourage local kids to come & watch us rather than Man U, Liverpool, the Dingles etc. That said, there would also be many downsides. - Would need board not to lose their heads a la Bradford, Leeds etc and end up massively in debt. - Massive media interest is not necessarily a good thing - Huge increase in ticket prices, merchandise etc for us as the ordinary fans - Dictated to by the likes of Sky (a mate at work is a Man U season ticket holder and said last season he went to 11 league & cup home games in a row that weren't Sat 3 o'clock ko). It's a tricky one isn't it. On one hand I would love to see Town playing the likes of Chelsea & Arsenal each season. On the other hand, I have no desire to lose what makes watching Town great in terms of the social side, friendly family club, the friendly banter with most away supporters & trips to their clubs where we are largely treated well. My preference would be to see Town get up to the Championship & beat the Dingles each season
