Given that I'll be leaving Shrews about 4.15pm, will it be best to go via Brum and down the M5, or would I be beter off going the Kiddy Way?

your best way is to go m6 north, the further away from Cheltenham you get the better

Its a tough one.
If you go Kidderminster/Worcester it will take half an hour longer, but you can spend over an hour just getting from Junction 1 of the M54 to Junction 4 on the M5.
Best keep your ear on the traffic reports on the radio from 2pm onwards.
Anything that says slight delays is usually in my experience 1 hour on the travel time.
Even if you set off down the M54 and hear of trouble you can always get off and go via Wolverhampton or Bridgnorth.

As someone who does the Bristol - Shrewsbury route every home game I can only say that experience has shown that Shrewsbury-Bridgnorth-Kidderminster - M5 J6 and then south is the best. It is perhaps 15 minutes slower at the most but holdups on the motorway mean it is usually the best route - and there are always alternatives to miss any jam. I'd try to get past Kiddy by 5 though.

I also travel this route every monday and friday and have done for some years.
Safest bet is Kiddy without a doubt, 15 mins longer in time but 20 miles shorter in distance.
Point of note be aware of speed traps (hand held) south of kiddy, been there checking south bound traffic for the last 2 months on a fri afternoon.
Also get in early cos parking is a pain if you arrive an hour before kick off......

Not sure if it is still half term for the kids, but I went into Brum via M6/M5 last Friday and the roads were deserted. So may not be that bad, although before last week I would have said take the Kiddy route as well. ;D
