I didn't really think I had an accent at all. If I do it's a bit of a mixture plus a bit of posh because my Mum spoke posh and used to deck me if I said something that sounded "common"!!!! The reason I ask is that I've been having a bit of banter with our school postman. I work in the entrance hall and he always speaks to me when he brings the mail. Yesterday, he said, "You don't come from round here, do you? Where do you come from, Cheshire?" So - I explained- no, I'm originally from Shropshire. (Then we got talking about Shrewsbury Town F.C.!!!) Today he came in and said, "Speak to me- you've got a lovely rural accent!!" Hmmm- I don't think so!! I remember, though, when I first went to Liverpool to work, I was self-concious because I seemed to talk slower than they did- and I deliberately tried to talk in more "clipped " tones. What happened was- people said and still say) "You're not from round here!" Yet, when I first went back to Market Drayton after living in Liverpool they complained that I sounded Scouse!!!!! Actually, I'd be pleased if I had retained a little of the accent of my roots- it goes with the Severn Water in the blood- and suits a STFC supporter better than "Plakky Scouse!!" (or posh!!!)

throughout our years up here the Sheffield Shrews seem to have developed accents somewhere in between Town and northern...! always thought they was more of a northern influence than southern on how Shropshire folk speak though

When I first left Shrewsbury to join the RAF my fellow recruits called me Taff on account of my accent My grandparents spoke with a bit of a Welsh lilt- they were "border people" had lived in Gobowen, Western Rhyn, Llangollen (where my father was born) and Corwen. Two of my uncles actually spoke Welsh. My cousin from Newport sounds a bit like a yam-yam- since she lived in Birmingham, then Wolverhampton as a child. My other cousin is REALLY posh- she says "barth!!"

Living in Rochdale and teaching in Oldham, I get kids telling me all the time that I sound posh!!! I actually have a bit of a strange accent - mixed up. I had a really Welsh accent when I was little and used to get the mickey taken big style when I moved to Welshpool and I lost my Welshness. Would love to sound like a real Taf now though!!!!!!
