Peoples of B and A One of my mates, Justin who’s off the net for the next few days would like me to ask you all a question on his behalf as so he he’s some feed back on one of the main questions of his final year dissertation He’s studying a health and safety course and has been looking at the health and safety requirements of a football stadium and more specifically the re introduction or not of terracing (safe terracing) I know for a fact we have several people on here who are still 100% behind terracing and any comments on terracing and weather you think it should be introduced into new stadiums or existing stadiums would be great. Do you think that fans are capable of standing safely any more in the higher leagues with the number wishing to attend, why would you like to see it, for better atmosphere, higher capacities at grounds. Why would you not want safe terracing, do you think it gives the wrong images and puts families of going to football or do you will believe it to be dangerous. You can give you view from a town perspective or from a wider one As I said any comments on the subject would be great Thanks in advance

If managed properly, terracing is perfectly safe. I don't agree with two tier terracing (like is was at Hillsborough) but then again I can't think of any ground in England which still has a stand such as that.
So long as clubs adhere to the capacity limit set on such stands then I really cannot see any problem whatsoever.

In a straight race I reckon I could get out of the Riverside quicker than the seats at Kennilworth Road. (The Douglas Bader Away Stand I think it's called)

Last time I tried getting out of those seats I almost ended up in the row in front! Very very unsafe. I was in an all seater stadium the other week and it over 10 minutes to get out of the place and it was only 2/3rds full.

Terracing. The unfair scapegoat of the cr@p and frankly idiotic policing seen at Hillsborough

In my usual pedant mode: the leppings lane end at hillsborough wasn't 'two tier terracing'. the upper tier was seats (and still is). the fact that the terrace was split into pens with high fencing at the front was what made it unsafe. (oh and a small factor of opening the exit gates to let everyone in for free....) anyway i'm all for safe terracing - it's been unfairly scapegoated and is the only proper way to watch football. all seater stadia have priced the common man out of the world of attending live high quality football which is a Bad Thing. (and Charlie K agrees too )

Just a little point, how would disabled supports be provided for?,I'm not being awkward, just interested. I thought that now disabled were meant to have reasonable access, not like at GM, trust me! (not complaining)

I personally dont have a preference one way or the other, but we have to sit down cos me ma cant stand up for the whole 90 minutes But a few observations. Terracing isnt dangerous, people are. The whole drive against standing at footy, i think, stems from a few isolated, but none the less tragic, events. If they hadnt happened, then its probably fair to say that most top flight teams would still have terracing inside the ground. We live in a very reactionary, law suit ( ? ) orientated society, which is a shame. What people enjoy and want is now secondary. I was at such games as man city and ipswich in the 70s / 80s, with 15000+ people packed into GM. As far as i can remember, no one was crushed or maimed. From a safety/trouble point of view, i would prefer a clear oppurtunity to run away from trouble or be punched, rather than have a hard plastic seat lodged in the side of my skull. Its really a choice thing, and imo, its time people where given the choice to either stand or sit in a place that suits them, and that applies equally to the able bodied and the disabled.

What I would like to see at the New Meadow is an end similar to Macclesfield's home end (opposite the away end), where if people ie disabled or like Pab's family would like to sit but still be part of a singing atmosphere they could still be. About 10 rows of seats with terracing directly behind This could happen you know

(not complaining) I don't think anyone is proposing 100% terracing. There should be seats for those that want to sit, including disabled access. But one or two sides of the ground with terracing would be great, but I am not expecting it to happen, here or anywhere else.

your right Scooter, it isn't going to happen at NM, I know others don't like it, I do, but then I look forward to joining in with the others.

People stand for a large part of the game even when seating is the only alternative. I don't see the point of seats at all. I blame Thatcher.

Standing is safe. All that needs to be looked at is the amount of people that gain access to an area of terracing. If the capacity for that area is not surpassed then it is safe. Works here in Germany, no problems...why not England?

I went down to Stamford Bridge earlier this season, not once did anyone in the stand i was in sit down. (maybe at half time) It was the same at Anfield on Tuesday - people seem to sit down along the side stands because you can see a wave of them standing up when the ball goes out of view into the corners - I was in the Kop and was standing throughout the match (even though the announcer did remind people to sit down )
